The final EP with tracks taken from Ralph Lawson’s ‘Back To Basics Classics’ album is forthcoming taking you back to sounds which laid the foundation for the music he produces and plays today…
Basic Vision is a new imprint releasing a vinyl series of rare classics from the legendary back to basics club. Selected and compiled by the man who played the first ever record at the club, original resident DJ Ralph Lawson will be joined on this release joined by long term BTB resident Tristan Da Cunha on selector duties. Basic Vision 004 features a selection of uplifting late night classics from the legendary dance-floor of the club night Back to Basics. The club was one of the first on the UK to receive a late license in the mid 90s. This allowed resident DJs to develop their style over long sets. It also meant that the residents always closed the club and in summer from 4am the glass roof at The Pleasure Rooms let the sunshine in. All the cuts included on this record are bona fide morning records from the club. The all time classic Masters at Work dub of Chris Cuevas – ‘Hip Hop’ features in a previously unreleased edit, beautifully extended by Rob Mello that has been in the boxes of Ralph Lawson & Tristan Da Cunha for years. Lawson steps up to remix duties next for Detroit legend Eddie Fowlkes ‘Where Will I Be?’ Flip the record over to find the eternal groove ‘Happiness’ from Guidance records Free Energy aka Joshua IZ, one of the all time great house music producers from San Francisco. The series could only be concluded with the record that closed the night more than any other, Black Science Orchestra – New Jersey Deep. It appears here as an unreleased Lost in Time edit. All the tracks are cut to vinyl from the original master recordings and given enough time on high quality vinyl to ensure clean, loud pressings with original artwork by the godfather of punk design – Jamie Reid. The artwork spans across 4 records, which when each quadrant is collected together will form one piece of highly collectable artwork. The ‘Back To Basics – Rare Classics’ project, which has taken over 2 years to compile, includes 14 tracks from artists Cajmere, Cassio Ware, Mood II Swing, Eddie Fowlkes, Neal Howard, Black Science Orchestra and Armando, featured across the 12” vinyl EP releases. All the tracks have been cut to vinyl from the original master studio recordings after Lawson hunted down dusty old DAT tapes from lost archives. “The series focuses on highly collectable classic records from the club’s long history that paints a true picture of the music played on the dancefloor. The aim has been to create an album that anyone can enjoy listening to but is a valuable series for the aficionados.” Ralph Lawson. Ralph Lawson has been part of the bricks and mortar of Dave Beer’s Back To Basics since its inception, going on to become music director - Daft Punk, Danny Tenaglia, Derrick Carter and Francois K all made trips to Basics for their earliest UK gigs. Ralph has also helped the club win 5 major industry awards so far for Best Club and has been personally nominated for Best Breakthrough, Best DJ and Lifetime Contribution. Lawson then founded internationally acclaimed electronic music label 20/20 Vision. Alongside production partner Carl Finlow he produced a series of classics including ‘Raptures of The Deep’ by Wulf n Bear and ‘Lovelee Dae’ by Blaze. The 20/20 Vision record label has been influential in building careers for a multitude of international dance music luminaries including Maya Jane Coles, Crazy P, Huxley, Motor City Drum Ensemble, Paul Woolford and Audiojack. Lawson then became an integral founder of the pioneering live electronic project 2020Soundsystem, touring constantly around the world and hitting festivals from Sonar and Exit to Glastonbury and Burning Man. From his base in Leeds, UK, Lawson has consistently been at the forefront of electronic music, and this insight into his record collection will bring back memories as well as inspire new minds eager to learn the true history of house music, as viewed from the North of England. With this in mind Ralph Lawson recently announced he was curating as multi-venue one-day festival in Leeds on Saturday 2nd June, ‘inner city electronic’, featuring artists such as Peggy Gou and Floating Points.
