Post Post subject: trance definitions/terminology list? Reply with quote

hi, just thought one of these might be a nice addition to the site, would be of help to me and newbies,
had a short discussion on chat and tigrax suggested asking the moderators, for a list with definite terminolgies, sounded like a good suggestion so here i am suggesting it.

any comments would be helpful

u mean like....

Hardtrance - Fat Beats and quite often a big snare involved, for example DJ Scot project.. More of a hardcore feel to it than uplifting and sometimes not many synths used to achieve the effect

Uplifting Trance - Sweet Buildups, and a recognisable tune which after the beginning is usually repeated, Has an energy to it and often contains tunes that go on to make it more successfully at a commercial level

Progressive - Slow buildups, no main tune to it, but a journey of bass and beats cleverly used to great effect. possibly the most underground of trance styles.

Chilled- Lots of bass and minimal beats used to get the effect, eg michael woods, soft vocals sometimes and a real ambient feel to it, great for last thing at night or sunsets

that the kinda thing u mean ?

hmm, yeah something probably that sort of lines, just was thinking as a newbie, in dicussions and articles, nwords are used that often have a specialised meaning in trance in general, can be pretty hard for a newbie trying to figure it out, like bootleg, whitelable, a newbie can't exactly look these up in a dictionary, usually has to ask a tranceaddict, and even then alot of ppl have their own interpretation of the meanings, maybe ppl with a wide experience with trance and it's dervatives, can give a less subjective and more definitive meanings that everyone can grasp and use without confusion, it can be even extended to general terms used in trance i.e a complete overall list, like terms used in dj'ing, like in the tutorials done by steven he explains concepts and techniques like

Breakdown Mixing,Spinback,Power-offs and Dead-Stops,beat mixing,pitch adjustment, and so.on

that stuff could only be defined, by some one with the necassary experince and for a newb would be meanigless words otherwise, this would be alot of work putting it into a list pf terms, in them tutorials they seem to have effort put into them and shows how a "simple concept" in dj'ing can be so involved, a concept/techniques kind of lists, might not be a bad idea, but it is i quess alot of hard work!!!!

even so simpler terms like vinyl/turntable and so on probably would be included for the sake of completness and because they have a special place in trance,

thats bout the general idea, hmm, comments, sugesstions, ideas, constructive/deconstructive criticism would be welcome, as im sure many of you have experinces/knowledge to add to this
