What does the crew think of 2003? Who are their favorite producers of the last year and what would they like to see in 2004? A small retrospective on 2003… Read on!!

We all have our favorite producers, and all have our own opinion about 2003… So we decided to let all of you know…

davehart’s top 5 producers are:
1. Paul van Dyk
2. Vincent de Moor
3. Laurent Veronnez
4. Steve Helstrip
5. John Askew

The best thing in 2003 for dave was: That trance coming back to form with most of its releases. I think that this years crop of trance release has been of a more higher standard than 2002, there are more tunes I'd put into a mix from 2003 than 2002. It's still not back to where it was in 1999 but that was the golden year when it really took off. Another good thing was the fresh release from new artists such as Filo & Peri and Mark Norman.

2004 should be: Following on from where 2003 left off. Mainline trance producers need to focus on giving us more quality music and labels should give the talent that is not known to
many out there more exposure to give the scene fresh names.

And dave doesn’t want to see this in 2004: I really don't want to see any more commercial dance tracks being given remixes by established trance artists. It's those acts which give the scene a bad name.
Recognised trance artists remixing their material does not help at all. My second
thing
I'd not like to see in 2004 is any more major club and label demises. There have been a few this year, one most notable is Bonzai which has now managed to resurface as Bonzai / Banshee Worx.

Ian’s top 5 is somewhat different:
1. Terry Bones
2. Agnelli & Nelson
3. Mauro Picotto & Ricky Effe
4. Signum
5. Lange

Then his opinion on 2003, 2004:
2003 - Musically best thing was the return of Signum & Agnelli & Nelson to former glories, the formation of the armada label which will bring us quality pieces of tunage for trance fans. The Saddest thing was the shock retirement of Marco Guardia from Flutlicht & S.H.O.K.K. Projects

2004 needs a continuation of energetic but uplifting trance, a return of original hard trance pieces, not the same sounds etc, and more exposure for Psy/Techno artists and those who work hard for little reward 2004 must also be wary that we don't get too many samey tracks from the same producers, Like Roland Van Gelderen making 3 identical sounding tunes with just different melodies etc

Watts his top 5 consists of a few DJ’s also:
1. Marco V
2. F&W
3. DJ Chose & F
4. Tiesto
5. Scott Bond Vs. Solar Stone

Best thing of 2003 was GodsKitchen reopening and Magna 7.
2004 should head towards putting more energy into the individual dance
'scenes' - (trance, hardhouse etc.).
I don't want to see floods of bad productions, shoddy covers of classic tracks and disappointing performances from big name DJs.

Time for Andy P’s top 5, breakbeat reigns the world according to him!
1. Tom Middleton
2. Hybrid
3. Grayarea
4. Oliver Lieb
5. Evil 9

What was the best thing in 2003?
The best thing in 2003 was the fact that trance lost ideas and became stale but as that happened, more and more people turned to other genres. People discovered the smaller acts like Momu, Grayarea, Infusion and others and diversified their music tastes, which was nice to see.

Where should 2004 be heading!?
2004 should be heading in a completely opposite direction from 2003. I expect some trance deejays to crash and burn. PvD needs to find some new tracks, instead of playing the same stuff night after night just in different order. Tiesto and AvB need to pick better tracks and need to find some new ideas, which I think they will hopefully find. I expect more people to jump to breakbeat because it just keeps growing and if 2003 was any indication, then it just get bigger. I see more independent producers and smaller deejays doing more for the music scene than the big names. I think John Askew will become a household name (for parts where he is not a household name). Watch out for Dirty Bass, who I suspect will release another banger like emotional soundscape. Also I think Momu,Grayarea, Burufunk, and Infusion will influence the music more this year.

What don't you want to see in 2004?
A repeat of 2003. I'm sick of PvD playing the same tracks in different order and he needs to find the old PvD, when he played stuff that you never expected. I don't want to see deejays becoming more predictable with the tracks that they play. I don't want to see trance becoming even more stale, get more ideas. Also I don't want 2004 trying to be like 2003 in any terms because it is a new year and we need more variety.

DJ_Mikey_Mike’s top 5:
1. Paul van Dyk
2. John Askew
3. Terry Bones
4. Paavo Siljamäki
5. Nu-NRG

What was the best thing in 2003? - Paul van Dyk of course.
Where should 2004 be heading? - Techno! The bass is gonna get ya!
What don't you want to see in 2004? - The death of uplifting trance. It needs to make a strong come back.

Look for the rest in part 2 of this retrospective!!
