4 Strings needs no introduction to anyone here and with past productions of quality tunes such as 'Diving', 'Daylight' and 'Into The Night' their reputation precedes them. This time round, with their latest production on Liquid Recordings, they literally go 'Back To Basics'...
4 Strings is comprised of three members - Carlo Resoort, Jan De Vos and Vanessa Van Hemmert. Carlo was the founder of the 4 Strings project. He turned his musical hobby into his day job and with over 9 years of experience he knows his stuff - 4 Strings' track record is testament to that. Starting with their debut track 'Daytime', they went on to produce the massive 'Into The Night' and continued to go from strength to strength.
'Back To Basics' still has that trademark 4 Strings sound, but takes a different approach - one which is simpler, borrowing on a more basic idea. On this vinyl, we have the Original Mix, a Vocal Mix and there is also a DJ 4 Strings Remix of 'Summersun' on the B2 side. It is set to be released in late February.
:: 4 Strings - Back To Basics :: Liquid Promo :: LQ038
A1: Original Mix The beginning of the Original Mix is very beat and percussion focused. The percussion builds and is added to in gradual steps. The more noticeable percussive element is the 'techno hi-hat' - a free ringing hi-hat every half beat - which is used throughout the track. There is a simple bassline which is present from the very beginning and strictly adheres to its simple looping melody - it is also a very typical '4 Strings' sounding bass instrument. As the track moves along, the bass develops a coarser edge to it and some strange high pitched ringing sounds blend themselves into the sound. These soon give way to a coarse synth which plays in intermittent stabs. The breakdown is a general reduction in sound, then a large snare build up into a louder section of the track. The second half of the track continues just as the first half left off really, as I said, this track sticks to a very basic concept. There is one more breakdown and another dose of the 'main' section before the track, quite quickly, removes each layer until it reaches the end.
B1: Vocal Mix The Vocal mix of 'Back To Basics' is identical to the Original in general sound and structure. The differences are that the track begins by fading in and there is a presence of a very electronically sampled female "Ahhh" vocal. Very soon, you get the full vocal, which talks over the music (and makes sense out of the title!) and then there are intermittent "I'm back to basics." vocals mixed in as the track progresses. The full vocal also talks over the breakdowns. I like the sound of this vocal - again, it is simple. It is literally just talking, but it has a serious sound to it which adds to the overall driving progression that is present in this track.
B2: Summersun (DJ 4Strings Mix) There is an added extra here on the second half of the B side - a DJ 4 Strings Remix of 'Summersun'! This remix begins with a hard sounding beat and a funky sounding bassline which is full of movement. As the track progresses, more percussion and bass are added until a rather strong and coarse sounding synth begins to play a stabbing melody, commanding the track and making you think this one is quite a hard trancer. Then comes the twist - the stabbing synth begins to follow a more melodic path as the track enters a breakdown and it is joined by another synth playing the same melody. This new synth is the classic 4 Strings synth that we all know and love from 'Into The Night'! This stark contrast of harsh against soft synth works very well and a really nice sound is created. Once the tune drops back in after the breakdown, the track has gained that 4 Strings feeling and the classic synth floats you along until it cuts out and the track regains its darker, driving sense and feeling. The stabbing synth has another little workout, until there is a repeat performance of the breakdown and the introduction of that nice floaty synth. A final main section plays out until the track quickly cuts out layer after layer and comes to a close.
Conclusion:
A different approach by 4 Strings this time round. However, some may find 'Back To Basics' just a little too basic. The Vocal Remix helps out here because the added vocal samples do help to add a lot more to the track. The remix of 'Summersun', though, is a really nice piece of trance with that distinct 4 Strings sound and feel to it.
