E-Craig goes head to head with alter-ego Alegria for Spinnin' Records' most recent release - 'Global Drum Attack'...
Moving on from his last massive tracks - 'Smoke' and 'Somebodys Watching My Set' - E-Craig has combined housey carnival sounds with the attacking drive of techno to produce this latest offering. 'Global Drum Attack' is a step further on and upwards from 'Dutch Drum Attack', released way back in 2000...
:: E-Craig Vs. Alegria - Global Drum Attack :: Spinnin' Records :: SPR008
A: Global Drum Attack (212 Mix) Right from the start you can hear the similarity from the original 'Dutch Drum Attack'. The rolling oscillating bassline is unmistakable. The short introductory section is muted and contained and a growing high pitched wail is used to bring the track into full force. The bassline takes on a fuller, rounder and much much deeper sound. A line of snare drums begin a constant and unrelenting attack, piling on the drive and pace right from the start. Another element which emerges is a stab of almost old school sounding synth every two beats. Nicely placed, it adds another stage of progression and movement. The vocal element in this track is very subtle - it consists of a loud, echoed sample of someone exhaling and it sounds pretty spooky to be honest! During the two breakdowns in this track there are also a few whistles and shouts, fitting in with the whole carnival drum theme. The last thing I'd like to point out about this track is the way it reacts at the end of a breakdown. Its one of these tracks that, instead of building up and then kicking off into a main section, builds and builds and then just seems to 'overflow' back into the track. It happens very smoothly and almost unexpectedly, adding great continuity and flowing elements to the track.
AA: Global Drum Attack (212 Dub) The 212 Dub of 'Global Drum Attack' is remarkably similar to the 212 Mix with only a few subtle differences. Firstly, the 212 Dub is longer as is the first breakdown while the second breakdown is shorter. Secondly, the periodic stab of synth is brought in right after the introduction. Thirdly, there are no vocal samples - exhales, whistles and shouts. Finally, there are a lot more short 4 beat interludes to break up the longer sections, adding some variety and breathing space.
Some very subtle differences so its basically down to the individual to decide which version they prefer.
Conclusion:
Another strong production from E-Craig / Alegria! Thanks to the highly catchy Cave - Carnival-esque drumlines and the killer driving bassline means for one stomper of a track!
