A new label, a new artist and an unknown remixer - it usually brings out interesting results, but does this record follow that trend?
Kaan Duzarat – Organic Intelluctual (Only Records)
This is the first release on Romanian based label Only Records, which distributed by the UK company called Mixturi, the man behind that distributor, also runs the highly touted CP Recordings. I don’t know much about this new label besides what I have already stated but I do know that some writers have told me that they should be one that I keep my eye on, but that remains to be seen if they can hold my interest. Kaan Duzarat is a new name to just about every single one of you, except if you are heavily involved in the Turkish music scene. He was born in Eskisehir, Turkey, 24 years ago and he has since started to gain more exposure. He works for some electronic station in Istanbul and his deejay gigs have become more frequent. So this is his first 12” release and also first release of Only records.
A1.Original Mix B1.Jay Wave Remix
A1.Original Mix
Right off the start, you realize why some have predicted huge things for Mr.Duzarat because he starts the record off very slowly, then with tremendous precision, he throws in some creepy riffs. The song is more of what I am calling “smart progressive”, these days, which basically means, it is well thought out and does not fall into the formulaic trap that is killing the scene. As the track picks up steam, it reminds you of Max Graham at times because of the fierce minimal energy it contains. It makes great use of a harmonic riff about halfway into it and it shows that some of the best records are coming out of countries that you don’t think have big dance scenes. I think it is a smart record and Kaan Duzarat’s style will take him far in the music industry. The only drawback is that it may be a little too original for some because they rather listen to formulaic stuff that is killing the scene. I love it, originality always gets high marks with me.
B1. Jay Wave Remix
Normally, I’m telling you all about an artist and some background information on the remixer but I don’t know much about Jay Wave, other than that he is from Romania and that he has done one or two other remixes. Here Jay Wave attempted to make an even more sexy version of Organic Intelluctual but I think it fails to reach that goal. He starts out in a slight tribal progressive direction. He tries to makes it a slow builder, which it does very well but it does not seem to grab my attention. He makes great use of percs with some great sound effects and the track is very unique but it lacks that little extra, what exactly, I cannot quite put my finger on it. Jay Wave is certainly talented, that is also apparent but it fails. I’m sure there will be people who think differently and I’m happy to hear your opinion on this record.
Conclusion:
Kaan Duzarat creates a superb original track that some progressive deejays will pick up because it sets the mood and will be used near the beginning of sets. The flipside does not wet my appetite and it certainly does not pick up interest. I seem to lose it about halfway into the remix but it is a decent effort for a new label and I’m looking forward to seeing what else they will put out because it shows you the more intelligent progressive sound that is coming out of Eastern Europe.
