Finally after what seems like an absolute age of waiting, 'Tundra' has finally seen release. This one has been eagerly anticipated by many people for a long time. Is the hype still there...?
:: Menno de Jong - Tundra :: Intuition Recordings :: INTU902
A:: Tundra (Fierce Dub) When I first saw the mix name - 'Fierce' - I was instantly intrigued. Menno's style in trance isn't usually something that can be described as such. However we've seen some tough work come from his direction before in the form of 'Majestic' under his Sayla guise, so something fierce may not be such a surprise. Anyway, the toughness in this track comes primarily, and almost exclusively, from the kick. Its extremely tight and punchy. The other fierce sounds come from a course bassy synth effect used through the track. A nice twist in style here. On top of this harsher sound though, the rest of the track's components are extremely gentle, melodic, calm and trancey. The smooth bassline is deep and active, but not obtrusive; the synths are light and delicate; and the pads are ultra lush. Menno has combined many excellent things in 'Tundra' indeed. The most is made of 'Tundra' when it reaches the breakdown. This is where the melody comes in to play. Using the delicate synths, the most smooth and gentle melody is so subtly played. It's such a calm and uplifting sound its almost hard to believe. The (unfortunately rather brief!) main section is headed up by an almighty drum roll and the melody kicks back in along with everything else that makes this track so great. The melody itself suits the tracks name superbly, the feeling given out is one of solitude yet with tranquil beauty. A simply stunning piece of trance.
B: Tundra (Mark Otten's Energetic Mix) Again, this remix also suggests the expected style of the music to follow. Although I was curious as to how energetic a Mark Otten remix could be since his strengths lie heavily in the progressive trance world. My curiosity was confirmed here. The track itself is pretty mellow throughout, being pushed along by synthy bass and deep kicks. There are gentle synths playing with small repeating melodies throughout the track and the only time you'll hear the main 'Tundra' melody is during the break where the synth playing it doesn't do it justice. The track continues as it was after the breakdown passes. The sound of this one is something you would expect from Mark Otten, but it certainly isn't 'energetic'. Its not a bad track by any means, its just really proggy trance which doesn't live up to its title.
Conclusion:
This release is worth it for the A-side alone. Menno's Fierce Dub of 'Tundra' is a quality piece of superb trance to say the least. It's only downside is that the main (and best!) section is a little short lived. Mark Otten provides a decent but a bit inappropriately named slice of prog trance. Worth the wait, 'Tundra' isn't one to miss out on!
