Frankie Knuckles needs no introduction as it’s a name that within house circles that is known by everyone. Here is his latest mix compilation released on his brand new label NOICE!music. It’s a house fans mix to treasure.
His new label NOICE!music first launched itself at the beginning of this year with its first offerings to be a remake of a Franike classic from years ago the Whistle Song. Gimmie Gimmie was the other record released along with it. On the bounce from that initial first release, which went down very well with me, comes a brand new mix album. The simple Dub has been around for many years catering for those who just don’t like vocals and prefer to keep them down to a minimum with the music they listen to and play. For this mix Frankie has drafted in some of his most reliable House music friends to create a unique Dub oriented mix compilation. Titled a DubJ’s Dlight this album has been crafted with the DJ firmly in thought and should appeal to those who like to keep their vocals down to a minimum.
01. Overture (Blaze's Journey Instrumental) 02. 'Journey' feat. Nicki Richards (Quentin Harris Remix) 03. 'The Whistle Song Revisited' (Frankie Knuckles & Eric Kupper Remix) 04. ?Afro Shimmy (Gimme Gimme)' feat. Nicki Richards & Frankie Knuckles (Eric Kupper Remix) 05. 'Keep On Movin' (Frankie Knuckles Dub Beats) 06. 'Gimme Gimme (Disco Shimmy)' feat. Nicki Richards & Frankie Knuckles (Eric Kupper Remix) 07. 'Matter Of Time' feat. Nicki Richards (The Groove Junkies' Soul Excursion Dub) 08. 'Because Of Your Love' feat. Jamie Principle (The Groove Junkies' Sexy Spoken Word Dub) 09. 'Bac N da Day' feat. Jamie Principle (The Cleptomaniacs Dubstrumental) 10. 'I've Had Enough' feat. Nicki Richards (The Shapeshifters' Remix) 11. 'Enuff Already' feat. Nicki Richards (The Groove Junkies' Excursion Dub)
I’ve only ever heard a few mixes from Frankie before having a look over this compilation. I’ve never had the pleasure of the man live as has thousands of house fans all over the world. There are always tracks on compilations that stick out and there are a few on here.
Who says dance music is full of electronic created noises? The first things that’s hits you with this mix on the opening track are the sounds. Overture is a flute rhythm based affair which kicks off this mix very nicely. It really is a good intro track which leads into Quentin Harris progressive remix of ‘Journey’. Of course not all dubs are entirely vocal free as with some tracks it’s the vocal element that really makes the track.
The mix from this record into Frankie’s reworked Whistle Song anthem is a smooth as a baby’s arse. It leads straight into the build up of what for me is one of Frankie’s greatest crafted melody’s I’ve ever heard. That track in particular is not too much different to the original released way back in the day but it’s brought it up to date with today’s house sound.
The mixture of different style of tracks in this mix gives it a very entertaining flow. You have the piano strings featured in Gimmie Gimmie along with the Sax influenced grooves featured in Matter of Time. That particular track is a very funky upbeat record with a banging groove to it. It’s one to get your feet tapping. The mixing on this mix is faultless with one smooth groove leading into the next. The Groove Junkie’s provide a very good helping of deep groove with their remix of Because of Your Love. The changes in it are spot and it picks up the tempo in the mix very nicely by introducing a harder beat.
I would say I like the latter part of this mix from Frankie. It started off chilled with some relaxing progressive melodies offering lots of varied sounds and beats and moved into a more thumpy house beat with deep groove changes. No finer example of a good house track would be in the form a remix by the Shapeshifters. Lola’s Theme might be the only track you’ve ever heard from them but they do produce very good house music that has not had the success and popularity as that record. I’ve Had Enough has a deep piano riff along with vocals which really go with the flow of the track. I’d say it would be lost without them as they go nice with the piano hook on it.
The Groove Junkies provide another remix on here that rounds up the mix very nicely. A good funky deep house groove on this one ensures your interest is kept right until the end of the CD.
What I like about this mix is the flow of tracks and excellent mixing throughout as you would expect from Frankie Knuckles. The concept of creating a mainly Dub oriented album jammed with remixes rather than originals is a good idea. The tracks start of mellow and turn deep to give you a fun flowing energetic mix of quality house from on e of America’s finest citizens.
Conclusion:
I enjoyed the album and I’m sure it will be gathering a few more plays as winter comes nearer. A very good debut mix release on Frankie’s brand new label which he will be promoting for the rest of the year through various worldwide DJ gigs. Keep an eye on his site to where you can find him spinning over the next few months.
DubJ’s Dlight is available to digitally download right now from Beatport and Traxsource. A full CD release will be available throughout Europe this month.
