Out now is a funky number called 'Nymph' made by Mark Sinclair, a producer hailing from Scotland. Being played by the likes of Sander van Doorn and Marcel Woods and with a Ronald van Gelderen remix on the flip, let's check out if this release is worthwhile.
Mister Sinclair is actually no stranger to music production: he started writing music as well as taking piano lessons at the age of 14 and had his first track released at the age of 17. Other than that, he toured around with a rock band which earned him live appearances on both TV and radio. Now back to producing electronic music, he brings us 'Nymph'...
A-side: Original Mix Although its relative shortness (under six minutes), this track grabs you instantly with its funky, driving and utmost dark, techy percussion, mysterious female moans and instant ability to create a rapid, hardhitting vibe. Filled with harsh & raw synth stabs, a very forward thinking structure and multiple teasing mini-breaks, this is definite food for the floors which is really hard to describe using just words. In one way, it's quite the mean beast with its techno-ish, blasting drive and wicked basslines; in another way, you could also use it as a build-up to an evenly energetic set filled with techy productions like this one. This is one of them tracks that has the ability to make you want to shake around without remorse, without you knowing exactly how or why. I guess it works on the subconscious! Rating: 7,5/10
B-side: Ronald van Gelderen Remix The remix comes from one of High Contrast's regular artists. RvG gives 'Nymph' a slightly more straightforward workover, not really in the style we're used from him but definitely fitting into the style of the original. Deep, blurry basslines take on a leading role, accentuated by them sexy female snips and a simple yet effective percussion. The one thing this remix is all about is a raw, typical van Gelderen riff playing this repetitive melody over and over again; it's being built up and down constantly, generating waves of energy here and there. That's also kind of where the problem of this remix lies: it doesn't grab you all the time, yet instead it goes up and down in terms of power, mainly caused by the rather standard, almost simple approach that has been taken on here. A nice try, but it can't top the original at all. Rating: 6/10
Conclusion:
If you're a fan of intricate, inventive techy stuff, then go get the original right now. It's quite the dancefloor bomb with its cool structure and wicked atmosphere. Ronald van Gelderen's remix is of the so-so caliber; it's a tad uncomplex and relies totally on that one riff which gets rather boring at a certain point.
