© New StateThe original 'Goa Mix' from Paul was voted the greatest 'Essential Mix' ever produced for the world famous Radio One show. It's back for 2010, reworked and re-mastered for compact disc...

There is no doubt Paul Oakenfold is one of the biggest icons within dance music having released records and mixed together sets that will be forever marked down in history as ones that set the standard for the future. His musical range stretches far beyond the meadow as not only is he a force within dance music he has remixed the likes of Madonna, The Rolling Stones and produced film scores, one most notable for Swordfish. If you flash back to the late nineties he was one of the guys who pushed trance into the mainstream spotlight and one mix that got ears around the world addicted was his 'Goa Mix' broadcast on Radio One's 'Essential Mix' show.

That was way back in 1994 and has been voted by Radio One's listeners as the greatest mix to ever be aired on the legendary radio show. Fourteen years is a very long time and you might be forgiven if your memory of the mix is a little patchy in this day of age but be prepared to be reminded. The Goa Mix 2011 is the re-worked and re-tweaked compilation based on that very special mix spread across two CD's. It may be 2010, so it may be celebrating the New Year a little early but it does so with some outstanding style. One of the reason's the mix was never released into the public domain was due to licensing for the tracks featured on it. Back then, I don't think labels wanted to have the music made available, not at least without a good wallet stuffed full of notes before hand anyway.

This new 'Goa Mix' may not have the same sequence that the original did but it's packed with the same essence of the genre bending goa and trance sound Paul used to play back in the day. It's an education for those who may have never heard his defining mix from 1994 and a look back at what made Paul Oakenfold such an iconic dance icon. He's still at in 2010 though with his Perfecto label joining the Armada network and is currently on tour with his new Face Lift club night concept which will see him trekking across America throughout November. The music may have changed from what it was but mixes like this drop you a timely reminder on just how good his sets were back in the 90's.
