Biography:
The design-student Nick Bracegirdle started his music career under the name Disco Citizens together with Leo Elstob.
Their first release was "Right Here Right Now" in July 1995 on Deconstruction records. Which became a top 40 UK-hit.
Not happy with the label, they left in 1996. Nick started his own label, Modena Records and Cyanide Music. And later they teamed up with Alex Gold's label Xtravaganza.
They changed name, and called themselves Chicane. And their first release was "Offshore".
It became a massive success. It entered the official UK chart as #14, in the competitive christmas week of 1996. And it reached #1 at the Mixmag Buzz chart, #1 at the Music Week Dance Singles chart, #1 at the MTV Dancefloor chart, #2 in the Record Mirror Cool Cuts chart, and #5 in the DJ Club chart.
It did very well in Europe. It was higly played at MTV. And the song became a classic Ibiza-hit also. The video was even shot at Ibiza as well.
But together with all the success, Leo Elstob left Chicane. And Nick was on his own.
Nick continued recording as both Chicane, and Disco Citizens.
In March 1997 he released the new Disco Citizens single "Footprint". It went straight in at the UK top 40 as #34, and did very well at various club and dance charts. It reached #2 at the MTV Dancefloor chart, #2 at the Music Week Dance Singles Chart, #2 at the Record Mirror Cool Cuts chart, #6 at the Mixmag Update Buzz chart, #10 at the DJ Dance chart, and #11 at the Record Mirror Club Chart.
As Chicane, he followed the success of "Offshore", with the single "Sunstroke".
"Sunstroke" was released with two totally different radio-edits. One original, and one Disco Citizens remix edit. Both were very successfull.
The video is very similar to the video of "Offshore". It's like a continue of "Offshore". And MTV still played the Chicane videos a lot.
"Sunstroke" became a massive success too. It hit #21 on the official UK chart, #1 at the Mixmag Update Club Chart, #4 at the Record Mirror Club Chart, #5 at the DJ Club Chart, #7 at the Mixmag Update Buzz Chart, #7 at the Mixology Club chart, and #10 at the Record Mirror Cool Cuts chart.
The next single up was a new verion of "Offshore". The reason was a illegal bootleg version by Anthony Pappa. Anthony mixed "Offshore" together with a song called "A Little Love, A Little Life" by Power Circle. And then it was decided to release it official, by Xtravaganza. (Probably because it was so good...)
This single followed the success, hitting the official UK chart as #18.
The debut-album, "Far From The Maddening Crowds", finally came in September 1997. 11 tracks, running on 72 minutes, that takes you to a new landscape of beautiful sounds! Salt Tank also appeared on the album, co-writing the song "Leaving Town". This album have now (March 1999) shipped approximately 80,000 units world wide.
This album took up even two more singles. "Lost You Somewhere", released October same year, also reached the UK top 40. As #32. "Red Skies" was also released as a single, but only in some countries (Belgium?, Holland?).
Together with all the success with Chicane, Nick continued with the Disco Citizens project as well. In the summer of 1998, Disco Citizens' third single was released, "Nagasaki Badger". In October 1998 Nick teamed up with Ray "Madman" Hedges. The man who created hits for groups like Boyzone and B*Witched. Together they made the next single "Strong In Love", which was based on Nick's first release "Right Here Right Now". For the vocals of this track, Nick found Mason. Suprisingly enough it wasn't any huge success. It reached #32 on the UK charts, but personally I think this is maybe the best Chicane song there is, and deserves better.
But Nick showed up in 1999 as well with the brilliantly chilled 'gaelic house' track "Saltwater". Nick wrote the song together with Ray "Madman" Hedges again! It includes a sample from Clannad's "Theme From Harry's Game". But not quite only a sample...Nick actually invited Maire Brennan back in studio to re-record the vocals! The video was shot on a beach, and at the famous club, "Gatecracher" in Sheffield. Chicane fans hoped for a UK top 10 hit. And they got it! It smashed in as #6 in the official UK charts, and beat Offshore's #14! It also topped the official UK club charts for about a month!
And now, the much awaited second album, "Behind The Sun" have been released....cluding the Bryan Adams collaboration "Don't Give Up" on it. This song was featured on the Bryan Adams album "Best Of Me" as a hidden ghost-track.
And this was the track that started a new chapter. After years of work, Chicane finally gets a #1 hit. It knocked Madonna down from the UK top spot, and was a massive hit all over Europe. Chicane is no longer an unknown name...and the success doesn't seem to end...
