I was thinking about this as I listened to AvB's ASOT 2005 CD. There is no doubt that he changed styles, in his own productions, through Armada, and the stuff he plays (on his radio show, on CDs and elsewhere). He used to play more uplifting stuff, now he mostly plays stuff that is a mix of melodic and progresssive.
The question is, why did he change?

Well I think he's been slowly changing for along time tbh... Check out 'Armin Van Buuren - 003 In Motion' and that is a very progressive/uplifting compilation -- I still think his livesets and his ASOT shows are this flow of progressive into uplifting and beyond but some of his CDs in between try and be very 'one label' based i.e. Armada.

Like a lot of artists who have been producing the mixing for a long time the majority always changce their style and move to different styles. Just the way things are really.

Heh man i think on ur poll should be another option: All of the above...
Wink

He changed because of the first 5 choices u mentioned on the poll! In addition I will dare to say that armin cares more to be labeled as a very famous trance dj than try to promote the trance he loved when he started in the scene...as it seems, he changed his style in order to get audience whith other musical tastes too...So he has to include in his style all those elements and characteristics of that other genres in order to bring to the scene new people...But he ended up with a formula which destroys trance's perception itself due to the over - mainstream characteristics (such as very happy melodies meaningless melodies-mcprog trance etc)So in conclusion i believe that armin's deeper reason of changing was to top the top 100 djs on the world and he is trying to do what paul van dyk and tiesto do: find new and bigger -in numbers- audience to promote theirselves as top trance djs with the only problem be that their formula is taking trance's away most important thing:Deepness ,darkness and the really underground vibe trance used to express while ago and i think that's the reason trance was huge all over the world around 99-2000 (before any ian van dahl and lasgo arrive on ppl's ears)

P.S I don't have any cruel intentions against anyone just stating the facts from my angle view

I think it has something to do with the sounds available with the new abbleton live software too.

The new abbleton live software allows a more deeper type of trance to be produced. That's what i meant.

I think it's a mixture of Armin getting tired of old stuff, the rise of progressive sounds and foreseeing the change and promoting Armada wich results in the style that dominates trance nowadays. And in my opinion it was Armin who setted this trend but Gabriel & Dresden were the ones who first came out with this similar sounds.

I also think Armin is a very handy guy, he just jumped in at the right time and now his ASOT show has become the guideline for trance to many.

It doesn't matter what made him change his style.
But he sure lost me now. Really don't like his fluffy mellow xylophone vocal stuff he plays or produces.

But on the other hand... he made me look for new styles, so thanks to him, I'm all in PsyTrance now! Very Happy
