Currently, my motherboard has on-board sound - would it be worth it to upgrade to an actual soundcard (such as a SoundBlaster Audigy series, or something)?

I guess I'm not real sure what these cards do differently than my standard on-board sound. Does anyone know the benefits of having a separate soundcard?
