© glastonburyGlastonbury is un-mistakably one of the largest festivals in the British calendar. This morning i came across news of possible closure due to the vast majority of people who go without a ticket, sneaking through the fences. This year new enforcements are in place and of these are exceeded-closure for glastonbury!

Gatecrashers warned they could kill off Glastonbury

Gatecrashers plotting to breach Glastonbury festival's fences this year could, if they succeed, jeopardise the event's future, the organisers said yesterday.

Unveiling an "impenetrable" £1m security fence, the festival's founder, Michael Eavis, urged those without tickets to stay away to safeguard the future of Europe's most enduring music and arts festival, which is sponsored by the Guardian.

Mr Eavis said that two years ago there was a massive influx of ticketless people on the site - his dairy farm in Glastonbury, Somerset - which caused the cancellation of last year's festival. He warned that another breach, during the three-day event from June 28-30, could see the festival stopped for good.

Avon and Somerset police and Mendip council say that if the event exceeds its limit of 105,000 people it will not get a licence in the future.

Mr Eavis said: "We are appealing to consciences - please don't come without a ticket. The local council have made it clear that if anybody breaks through the fence, there will be no more Glastonburys. The festival will be getting 17 hours' coverage on BBC2. So, if you're like those who haven't got tickets for the World Cup in Japan, I'd urge you to stay at home and watch on TV instead."

His warning, echoed by the former Clash frontman Joe Strummer, as well as many of the charities that will benefit from the festival, was intended to end the annual battle between fence jumpers and security personnel. People have tunnelled under, climbed over, and knocked down the fence, and gangs have charged for use of tunnels and rope ladders. There have also been ticket scams.

Mr Eavis said he was confident that the 11ft steel fence along the 4.5 mile perimeter of the 320 hectare (800 acre) site would not be breached, but appealed to people to respect the festival. "This year things have to change for good," he said.

Strummer said people should think about safety, and pointed to the deaths of nine at Denmark's 2000 Roskilde festival. "That is a well organised festival going for 20 years - it showed it could happen anywhere. People have to be responsible ... we don't want people getting trampled to death."

The last Glastonbury festival donated £700,000 to charities. Mr Eavis confirmed that Pink Floyd, Rod Stewart and Isaac Hayes would appear this year."

So there you have it.... if you are one of those people who go without a ticket then please dont make an effort to go this year because it will see the end of a great festival!
