Bajwa-Dale as they are known are a Canadian pairing which have stormed the major Canadian parties back home. They have led such tours as Renaissance, Slinky and Mixmag, pushing out a total blend or progressive, trance, house into a sound which has seem them leave there home country. They are now setting their sights on the UK scene as this is the way they see their own personal development reaching their full potential. A great story!
Firstly could you give I:Vibes a bit of background about yourselves.
How did you and mike meet? What made you decide to collaborate?
Mike: We met about 15 years ago. We went to school together and have been best friends ever since.
Dale: Plus, we could really only afford one set of decks. A friend of ours was selling his, so we picked them up and the rest was history, so to speak.
Mike: And because we have slightly different tastes in music, we feel it makes a interesting combination when building a set. We feed off each others energy. Our sound would probably be a little different if we were to spin solo.
Dale: This way we are both kept on our toes, never knowing exactly where the other will take the set's direction.
How long have you been producing together? Dale: Just over a year.
You maintained a place on the top of the "British Telecom Independant Producers Chart" for 8 weeks. How much of a confidence booster was this? and do you think it was duelly expected?
Dale: It absolutely boosted our confidence. It was the first track we ever wrote. We had labels calling us wanting to sign the track, people emailing us saying how much they loved it, and our messageboard went nuts. It was an amazing response to our first effort.
Mike: It gave us confidence in our abilities as producers and really pushed us to take producing seriously, and as to see it as a useful creative outlet to further our Dj'ing career.
You have headlined tours for Slinky, Renaissance and Mixmag..what were each of these like? How did they compare to each other?
Mike: The big tours have been fantastic really. We played in front of huge crowds - the electricity of a big show can be great. And I'd have to say that the Mixmag World Tour stood out as the crowd was amazing!
Dale: I think Slinky would be the stand out for myself. A great crowd, great music and a good progression throughout the night, not just banging from begining to end.
On your web page it says, "In a time when DJing has become fashionable, even trendy, Canada's Bajwa & Dale Anderson have managed to steer clear of the trappings of a scene based on hype rather than substance".. do you think that this is of high importance ? not getting trapped in the mainstream, so to speak.
Dale: Well, it's more of a reference to all the party fliers and Dj bios we've seen as of late. Everything is just so overhyped and dramatized. We don't feel a need to say that we have played with this famous dj or that famous dj. We have played with some of the biggest names in the world, but that doesn't make US good Djs. We try to be "legitimate" with everything we do, whether it's our Dj work, productions or how we interact on our web forum.
Mike: As far as not getting trapped in the mainstream, we play what we think is great music, not what is trendy at the time. It goes without saying for us. We play the music we would want to hear if we we're on the dancefloor. But there's also the flip-side of the coin - we won't play tracks just because they're "underground" or whatever. We play what we love.
A question that was asked to put forward to you is: "can you ask them if the music climate in Vancouver had anything to do with them moving to the UK?"
Mike: Well, yes and no. There is fabulous talent coming out of Canada right now, with people like Luke Fair, Powerplant, Tiga and Jay Tripwire showcasing that Canada can and does offer world-class talent within the dance music community. And then of course you have Canada's progressive pride and joy, Max Graham, who really opened doors for the Canadian scene as a whole. But we really just wanted to get away from our comfort zone, to buckle down, and really take our productions and Dj'ing to the next level, without the distractions of home.
Dale: And what better place than London? A great deal of the records we get and consider quality, come from the UK. That, and we both have English roots so getting in the visa situation handled was relatively painless.
Can you give us a detailed descritpion of why you are moving away from your native country Canada to persue your music career in the UK? What opportunities does the UK potentially hold for you?
Dale: Having played with so many djs from England and Europe, we thought that this would be a great opportunity to foster those relationships, and make new contacts within the industry.
Mike: We really feel that the UK is the place to be for us to be, to springboard what we've spent years working on in Canada. We think there will be opportunities in the UK that we would have missed out on being somewhat secluded on the west coast of North America.
Dale: And we hope that people will respond positively to our music and that we can offer them something a little different...maybe with a Canadian feel of sorts.
Thanks a lot for the guys to take time out to chat to i:Vibes.. they have a new production coming soon. "You're So Free"..when further details have been finalised it will be brought to i:Vibes!
