i:Vibes is covering this years festival closely. Our first report from our three reporters consists of some general info about the arrangement, the weather, food and people. Read on to get a glimpse of the atmosphere.
The festival started off early for some visitors arriving Wednesday. They have survived heavy rain, thunder and lightning striking near the camping site. We arrived at Thursday with low expectations to the weather with gray clouds and light rain. This has fortunately turned to almost clear sky and a lot of sun.
The 15000 people seem to be in a good mood, content and happy so far at the festival. Everybody I have talked to are smiling and enjoying the bands, the nice weather and everything else the festival has to offer.
Compared to other European festivals, Arvika is at a smaller scale, but they have made the most of the space available. It is situated in a public park which works well for this kind of event.
There are 6 stages, with Impetus as the main stage for dance music, which has the facilities needed. A large dance floor with a lot of light decorations and two DJ booths placed opposite each other for non stop DJ-ing. Vintergatan as the largest stage features the biggest names like The Cure, Primal Scream, Orbital and Timo Maas.
The Norwegian performance group Pain Solution are doing walkabouts with sideshows like carrying chained hooks attached to their flesh. The program also states that there are activities around the festival not announced which one should look out for.
The food joints offers a good selection of dishes ranging from the traditional junk food to somewhat exotic wild boar kebab and elk.
The festival seems to be well organized and so far we have not heard of any negative incidents like theft or violence.
The bassist at Primal Scream asked the audience in their fourth song: “Is this a Goth convention?”, and I think that is a rather good description for a lot of the people attending this festival.
