© i:VibesAt the first day of the festival we attended two of the main events, Orbital and Timo Maas. We also decided to give an unknown (at least to us) DJ a chance to give an impression. Read on if we were impressed or not...

DJ Bjørn Svin: Impetus: 1800

It is never easy playing sessions early in the evening at Impetus dance floor. The crowd never got large enough to really provide a suitable frame for DJ Bjørn Svin and it is possible his performance suffered from this.

The start was a bit uneasy and he had problems getting the small crowd going. The first sets sounded a bit crude and did not have the drive you would usually expect. DJ Svin got his act somewhat together and provided better in the middle part of his set. The crowd got more involved, but was still low numbered, although growing.

Visually the Impetus scene has a typical setup of lights, There were arrangements of spots and projectors showing abstract symbols on dedicated screens hanging from the ceiling. A fairly frequent use of smoke gave the room a fine atmosphere.

Unfortunately the small crowd could not give DJ Bjørn Svin the setting he had deserved.

Orbital: Vintergatan: 0030

As one of the main events this evening Orbital entered Vintergatan stage at 0030 AM. From the start they were able to get the large crowd going, with a variety of new material, and a good selection of classics. Phil & Paul gave the spectators what they came for and throughout one and a half hour we were served songs like; The Box, Belfast, Chimes, Remind and Impact.

The spectators went wild from the first song and Orbital had a good dialogue with the energetic audience. Even though the concert area was large, Orbital managed to engage all and everyone was dancing during their performance.

The playlist was divided into four session which all held equally high standard, as expected. What also makes Orbitals concerts outstanding is their use of lights and motion graphics. By combining revolving screens, video projectors in addition to spots/strobes/etc. they achieve a perfect combination of sound and visuals. This turns each set into a progressive journey pleasing both ears and eyes.

Among the highlights were Satan, which probably is not their best recording but works extremely well live, and a remix of their own Funny Break.

This performance shows that after years of playing live Orbital still are able to renew their act and engage all their fans.

[i:vibes] review of
Timo Maas: Vintergatan: 0215

Maas opened with rather raw and crude sound to his sets and I got the impression that the there were a lack of flow to the early part. I got the feeling he could have worked the crowd more, but it’s probably fitting this maverick of the dance/techno scene. He probably just wanted to do things his own way as he usually does.

Throughout the session he played some really good remixes of songs found on his recent album ‘Loud’. The crowd was getting smaller as the concert evolved. However this didn’t seem to bother neither Timo Maas nor the remaining dancers and on-lookers. At the end of his show he played several different artists like PIL to round up the evening.

Visually it was a bit standard with typical spotlights with different colour schemes. As the night became morning the atmosphere from the start of his session somewhat disappeared due to the dawn.

I cannot help to think that Maas would have been better of with a performance indoor on a more intimate scene with more visual effects like Impetus stage.

Timo Maas had really a mission on his hands following Orbitals brilliant set. Unfortunately Vintergatan just got to big for Timo Maas this time and he did not manage to convince more of the festival participants to join his party.

Big thanks to Rene, Dag and Jon.
