JAX SHAND STREET S.E.1 [NEAREST TUBE LONDON BRIDGE. VENUE JUST OFF CRUCIFIX LANE Two of the leading producers and DJ’s in the Breaks scene have joined forces again to bring their notorious monthly club night HUM to the infamous Jax venue in London Bridge. Rennie Pilgrem and Meat Katie, who run top UK breaks Labels, TCR and Whole Nine Yards, will be exclusive residents at HUM on the first Saturday of each month. September 7th’s special guests include Lee Coombs, Elite Force and a live album launch performance from Rhythm Division.
Rennie Pilgrem’s TCR is widely acknowledged as pioneering the ‘Nu Skool’ Breaks scene which started with Friction, formed with Adam Freeland, Tayo and Ian Williams. Since Rennie’s 1995 underground anthem “A Place Called Acid”,TCR has released tunes from a superb roster of artists including Arthur Baker, B.L.I.M, Koma + Bones, Chris Carter, 2Sinners, Vigi + Zero and of course ‘Pilgrem’ himself. Rennie DJs all over the world championing deep tech, funk and tribal.
Mark Pember a.k.a Meat Katie has received accolades worldwide for Whole 9 Yards, the label he started in ‘98 to release dance-floor tech funk. ‘Arnica’ by Dark Globe in 1999 prompted Boy George to hail it as his record of the year at the Muzik Awards. Annie Nightingale said, “Whole Nine Yards is the best indy label in the UK”. Together with Mark’s prolific output W9Y has cutting edge artists Dylan Rhymes, Rhythm Division, DJ Hyper, Kerbcrawler and Dark Globe and is widely regarded as one of the most influential forces in breaks. Mark DJs the globe playing to a growing fanbase including the Chemical Brothers who he supported in Greece this summer. Mark is currently recording his 3rd album with Kingsize
Lee Coombs has forged his own style of DJ’ing, fusing funky deep grooves with electro, breakbeat, house and techno…blowing up dance floors from Edinburgh to San Francisco. In June 2001 Lee’s mix album “Future Sound of Retro” was widely acclaimed. It got heavy rotation, with Pete Tong and Seb Fontaine voted it album of the month in Ministry. Lee has re-mixed for Moby, Lamb and Planet Funk, collaborated with Meat Katie, Danny Howells and has an album out on Perfecto Breaks later this year.
Chris Hawkins and Leigh Savage a.k.a Rhythm Division have trademarked their rugged percussive beats and deep, twisted bass. Their reputation is for technical perfection and delivering that all too rare adrenalin rush. Live they’ve been compared to Orbital. Since their 1st release on W9Y in 1998 with “Gimme Some Juice” the Divs have consistently delivered 12” gems such as ‘Skin’ and ‘Uzi’ taken from their new album ‘Divided Rhythms’. Now after a two year sabbatical they are bringing their incendiary live show to HUM to launch the album.
Shack’s Elite Force is one of the most respected breaks artists/djs with his peerless 12”s and remixes. His debut EP 'Gasoline Alley’ flew into the national breaks chart in DJ mag at no 1. His first album ‘No Turning Back’ is due for release early 2003.
