Dutch producer Ralphie B, famous for Massive, and several remixes already, takes some time out to answer a few questions for i:Vibes.
Hi Ralph, how are you, thanks for participating in an interview with [i:Vibes]. Let's get down to business.
Could you tell us a bit more about yourself? Hobbies, girlfriend/wife, pets, interests, likes and dislikes, and anything else you want to share with us.
I'm 25 years old. I have a girlfriend, 'Dian'. We live together in Hendrik Ido Ambacht (near Rotterdam). No pets. I have a fulltime job in as ICT engineer. Interests are: internet, DVD, soccer and of course: music.
When did you first show interest in music? Do you have any parents that are musicians or so?
My parents are no musicians. I always have been interested in making music. I bought my first yamaha keyboard when I was 10 years old. A few keyboards later I started composing music with my pc using 'trackers'. Later I bought midi equipment.
Your very first release was Massiva. Were you annoyed to see everyone calling Massiva: Massive? (asked by Mathew)
It was indeed called 'Massiva' at first, cause 'Massive' sounds a bit unoriginal. Once the label spread the promos i was surprised but did not feel the need to change it back.
Where did you get the inspiration for Massive?
I went on a journey of 1 month to Indonesia, after I came back I started composing fresh again and made "Massive".
Your very first release under your Ralphie B guise was a shot in the bull's eye, played by Armin, Paul Van Dyk. What was your reaction when you heard that German DJ Paul Van Dyk played your song?
I've had few releases under the handle "Alpha Breed", but did not have that success. When it was played i was overwhelmed. Unbelievable!
Paul reworked your song for his compilation album 'The Politics Of Dancing', did you think he improved the song, or the other way around?
I think it's nice he tried to change it his way, but I think he can do better than this.
Massive has been released on Paul's label Vandit, what's your opinion about the outcome? The different remixes.
I think all remixes are well produced. I like the Filterheadz remix a lot, it has some progressive influences but not as heavy as the D. Ramirez remix (Data Records). Maybe more remixes will follow later this year.
What can we expect from you in the near and distant future? Maybe an artist album, or is that too soon?
An album is too soon. A Massive follow up is planned, expect it later this year. I hope to include vocals. It will be Ralphie B. style, but not a 'Massive' - clone. There will be some more remixes and I hope to have some time this year for a Midway follow up.
Were you satisfied about the remixes you did for Tastexperience and Misja Helsloot?
At the time I finished them not really. But now I think they are ok. Because my fulltime job I haven’t got much time to work on remixes. And remixes most of the time have to be finished in short time.
Is there anyone you look up to?
BT, Cass and Slide
What's in your opinion the best song at the moment? And ever?
I heard Art of Trance - Love Washes Over (Airwave mix), like it a lot. Best song ever: Binary Finary - 1999
Favorite DJ?
Tiësto.
And now, the ever reoccurring debate: MP3. Some producers see it as a means to promote their music for free, others see it simply as theft. What about you?
MP3 is indeed good promotion. But it should not get out of hand: In a few years, internet will grow faster, it will be possible for everyone to download the full wav-files of tracks. No quality loss. I hope government and recordbusiness will think of something.
Your second release wasn't under the Ralphie B. guise, but under Midway. Any special reason behind that?
It was meant to be a Ralphie B. follow-up. But because the "sound" was a bit different from "Massive". Blackhole decided to release it under a different handle.
Which of your own productions do you like most? I like Midway - Travelling most.
Ralphie B - Massive and Alpha Breed - Epic Future.
You aren't a full-time producer, you also have a daytime job. How hard is it to combine those two jobs? And maybe, when you have had some more releases, wouldn't you consider working as a full-time producer?
It's very hard. Because I work 5 days a week, I don't have many time to do remixes and own productions. However I don't want to be in the studio all time, so for the moment it's ok. But - yes - when it gets out of hand with the success I'll consider full-time producing.
Anything you want to tell our readers?
Thanks for the support!
Thanks a lot Ralph, for answering all these questions, and good luck with your future productions and remixes.
