Yet another interview comes into play, this time its from 21 year old Christopher Ast, who has made such a huge impact in Europe lately and is set to continue his success for the following years to come. This is what he has to say.
Interview for DJ Neo
The aspiring DJ Neo aka Christopher Ast from Germany speaks to i:Vibes about his role in the Blutonium saga which is continuing to detonate across the hard trance world of Europe.
i:Vibes: Neo, you're only 21 years old and have been producing since you were 15. How has your production style and sound changed over the past few years? And where did you musical influences come from?
Christopher: I started producing in the time when hardtrance had about 160-176 BPM. I always tried to keep that clubby "hands up" style combined with cool melodies. I don't think that my style has changed that much… well, I think that it has become more professional with new programs etc. but today my favourite style is still that hard clubby style.
My musical influences came from all of these hardtrance producers which I always looked to take the songs I like best and analysed them to decide what parts were the best. In that way I learned how to produce such tracks. i:Vibes: How do you describe the music you produce now? And do you think it will remain the same style for the rest of 2002 and 2003?
Christopher: Now I produce several styles; It goes from soft vocal trance to hard progressive club style, and I think the bandwidth of styles will rise in the next time, because I'm always interested in new experiments. For example, sometimes I even produce hip hop with some friends or chill out... but that's just for fun.
i:Vibes: You used to work under the label run by DJs @ Work "Vinyl Vibes" since 2000, before moving to Blutonium in 2002. Are there any differences in terms of your perspective in music when you moved to Blutonium? And did your style change to a more harder pumping style?
Christopher: The first reason for me was that i can reach more people with my music, because Blutonium Records has worldwide a higher value in the electronic music business, so I am not longer bounded to the German style of trance and techno.
But the main reason was that the people at Blutonium Records are superb in that everytime, if there are any problems, they’re always there. They put a lot of power and effort into the releases, which can only be good for them, and the release turnover period is fast, simply a strong platform. The first contact came about 2 friends, Le Brisc and Michael Fusseder which are part of the Blutonium Records team. They only told me about the label and gave me the chance to produce a remix for "Trip to Africa" in the year 2001.
This was the beginning for me and I went on to do more remixes at Blutonium Records, and the result was that Dirk Adamiak became interested in me and offered me a contract with Blutonium Records, so now I am a member of this family. That's the way it is :)
My Style hasn’t really changed, I still produce the same hard but also the same soft style at Blutonium, but now there is the possibility to create even monotonic non-melodic tracks.
i:Vibes: You have just released "Higher Level" with Dirk Adamiak aka DJ Session One. How was it like to work with one of the most affluent producers in European hard trance right now?
Christopher: It was really cool! I asked him what I shall do, he gave me the way the track should sound like and I produced it. Then I made a remix on my own, only with my ideas and then after 3 weeks the master was ready.
i:Vibes: To this date, you've worked with and for numerous artists such as Norman DJ, Thomas Trouble and others. Are there any favourite remixes or productions which you have done for VinylVibes or Blutonium?
Christopher: Yes my favourite remixes are:
Norman DJ - Go Back on Blutonium. Clever & Smart - Over Now on Vinylvibes And the latest: Waveliner - Lizginka on No Turn Records
i:Vibes: How about in terms of DJing, do you do any of that around Europe? or plan to?
Christopher: Currently I'm just producing, but perhaps there will be a Blutonium Boy vs. Dj Neo Tour :-) We'll see...
i:Vibes: Any favourite DJs in the world you can think of?
Christopher: There are many many good Djs on this planet, but i don't have any favourite.
i:Vibes: Using a full array of software mainly, how do you feel about using hardware to produce your music and what are your tips for those software users out there?
Christopher: Since I started with music production, I have always done it with software programs. Of Course Hardware and Software, both have their pro and cons but I think the way to produce with software is much faster. It is also harder because you must know how to get the quality near to studio-hardware quality. Well, tips for software users. Hard to say, there are many things you must consider. But the best that can happen to you; find other producers and work together, help each other and so on.
i:Vibes: And finally, what more do you want to tell the readers?
Christopher: Always let the level of your offbass-lowfrequencies be equal to the Bassdrum-Lowfrequencies :-)
Thanks !!!
