DJ/producer Johan Gielen is a name we all know. L'Esperanza, Twisted, We Know What You Did, are just a few of his top songs. Johan sat down with us, to answer a few questions about several things like DJ'ing, producing, and Airscape. Read on...
Hi Johan, thanks a lot for taking the time out to answer some questions for [i:Vibes]
Let’s get started.
i:Vibes: Could you tell us a bit about yourself, cause everyone knows your music, but the man behind it not. Any special hobbies, loves, girlfriends, and other stuff you want to talk about.
Johan: Johan Gielen, age 34, and apart from music, I have a passion for diving, and I have a love for keeping Japanese Koi fish (goldfish)
i:Vibes: How did you get in contact with the music, trough your parents, or on your own?
Johan: I was actually born with music, when I was 6 yeas old, I played old singles on an old record player.
i:Vibes: When did you decide that trance would become your ‘thing’?
Johan: I used to play about every style, but when trance was emerging, I immediately said, “This is what I want” because this music is very diverse, and you can eas ily transfer a message to the public (emotion, happiness, …).
i:Vibes: Everyone knows that Sven Maes is your partner-in-crime, how did you meet him? And why did you two hit it off like that?
Johan: I met Sven about 6 years ago, when I was still producing with Oliver Adams (1/2 of Praga Khan). Oliver had to go on a tour in the US and because I liked staying home to produce, he introduced me to Sven who had his studio at the same time in the same building. Sven is 100% musician and producer, and combine that with someone like me, and you get the result we have! We work together on my ideas, and the other way around.
i:Vibes: Your first MAJOR success was with Airscape, with L’Esperanza to be precise. Did you expect that? Cause all the major DJ’s caned it and remixed it, like Armin Van Buuren, DJ Tiësto, and many others.
Johan: I knew that that record would be a hit, but that it would be THIS big was a surprise for us, and in the mean time, it has become a classic, and you can still hear it often which is really nice.
i:Vibes: What’s your favourite remix of L’Esperanza?
Johan: Armin Van Buuren’s remix was and is the best one for me, hence why I still play that remix often.
i:Vibes: Under the disguise Airscape you made a lot of remixes, but lately, all the remixes are named Svenson & Gielen remix, why the sudden name change? Was it cause ‘The Beauty Of Silence’ instantly put the names Svenson & Gielen on the map?
Johan: This is due to the fact that Airscape had a contract with a record label, and I couldn’t release records under the Airscape name (I respect prior contracts) so we decided to go with the name Svenson & Gielen, but don’t worry, Airscape will make a big entry next year, better and bigger then ever!
Svenson & Gielen remixes are very wanted cause we wanted a different sound with this project then we had with Airscape, and just like you say so, the name is pretty hot at the moment, but if someone calls me and asks for an Airscape Remix, then that’s still possible.
i:Vibes: When the theme for Trance Energy "We Know What You Did" was initially being produced, what emotion or emotions that can be described were put into it?
Johan: When we were making this record, we came up with the idea about telling what happened in the weekend. That led to ‘yeah yeah, you can say what you want, but we know what you did’ and that’s where We Know What You Did.
i:Vibes: Are you proud when you hear one of your productions in Armin Van Buuren his show?
Johan: Yes, of course, we know each other pretty well, and when Armin has a new record, then I support that 100%. I think it’s really good to help and support eachother.
i:Vibes: Do you ever have plans to break into the more commercial market of charts, or do you get too much enjoyment from dropping your new tunes in front of massive crowds and seeing them go down so well to risk 'selling out'? (asked by ferrycorstenfan)
Johan: I’ll see what happens. Most important thing is that I can keep making nice records, and when there’s a commercial success with one of them, then that’s good.
i:Vibes: Are there any concrete plans for a Svenson & Gielen album, containing all productions from your different disguises?
Johan: The Svenson & Gielen album is ready, and will be in the shop around end of September, early October. It’s a varied album, but you have to listen for yourself!
i:Vibes: Is there anyone who you would like to work with? A vocalist, a DJ, or a musician? Johan: I’m always open for new things, and who knows, maybe I get to work with a great artist in the studio? And if I have to pick one special person then I’ll pick Tina Turner or Celine Dion, cause those ladies have a great voice.
i:Vibes: What’s your favourite tune of 2002? And ever?
Johan: My favourite off this year so far is Jurgen Vries >> The Theme, and my all-time favourite is Underworld >> Dark & Long.
i:Vibes: Your favourite own production and remix?
Johan: My own productions…… hard to say, but if I had to choose one, then I would pick L’Esperanza and Twisted. My best remix is Delerium with Silence.
i:Vibes: Favourite DJ?
Johan: Everyone who tries his best, and spins good.
i:Vibes: If you weren’t a DJ/producer now, what would you be doing? Still in the music business?
Johan: I think A&R or something like that.
i:Vibes: If the guys from Radio1 would ask you to do an Essential Mix, would you take their offer?
Johan: Yes, why not? I think this is a nice step, and definitely a great promotion for your name.
i:Vibes: What was your best experience when you were DJ’ing?
Johan: Sensation 2002, I had never experienced something like this.
i:Vibes: What is your opinion bout the whole mp3 scene? Is it good or bad for you? Would you do the same?
Johan: I’m not for it, cause it costs a lot for a producer but at the same time, it’s also a bit of promotion, but it is noticeable on your paycheck.
i:Vibes: How do you feel about drugs?
Johan: Music is my drug, I don’t need anything else. It’s all crap, and before you know it, you’re somewhere in the gutter. No thanks.
i:Vibes: Do you have any funny stories to tell that happened to you when you were off somewhere, as a DJ?
Johan: No
i:Vibes: Anything scary ever happened to you while you were in a club?
Johan: No.
Thanks a lot for talking to us, and good luck with your forthcoming album!
