Andy from Toronto was at the flying dutchman; Sander Kleinenberg's gig at the Guvernment at an exclusive event just last night. This was a true relief to some of those who were disappointed when his July gig was cancelled. This is what Andy had to say.
Earlier in July, most of us got ready for Sander Kleinenberg’s visit to the Koolhaus (right beside the Guvernment) but late July, near the date of the event) that gig was cancelled and fans of Sanders like myself were gutted because his gig here in March was totally off the hook.
But to our surprise, in early August, some of us were informed that a certain deodorant company was throwing a launch party at the Guvernment with Sander as the headliner. It was a private party, people had to get in touch with a lady to get on the guest list but the great thing was that this event was free entry.
Certain people who had his Nubreed 4 CD, brought it along to the event and we ran into him walking around before his gig and he signed my copy and dropped the hint that a new Global Underground compilation that he is doing will be released early 2003. Seems when people think of Sander, they think progressive and rightly so but when he comes to Toronto, he seems to play different, bangin house, and trance with a progressive element... perhaps its the crowd?
Well Sander went on at about 12:15am to the delight of most of the people in the place. He started out playing banging house for about an hour then started to drop trance with almost string elements to them then back to house. He did not play the normal deep progressive that he is known for but playing grooving music that kept the party going. He was really into it then about 2 hours into it, he started to go on a progressive trance element, almost like the 2nd half of his Nubreed 4 CD 2. Most of us in the crowd were hearing songs we had never heard before but most of us liked what we heard. He was playing to the crowd, pulling some fancy editing moves, pulling some funky dance moves in the dj booth. Then about 2 and half hours into his set, he put the headphones down and started to mix without them and started to play with the mixer much more than in the first half. He stopped at 3am when the crowds cheered then he clapped his hands then went to his record box and pulled out more records and started to go again to which the crowd that was left enjoyed every minute of it. He started to dance more in the DJ booth and play to the crowd more. 4am came and went and it was over and we went home.
Very good night, very good set and very good vibe and also it was the second time that I’ve seen Sander Kleinenberg in Toronto and both times, he has rocked. Both times, no deep progressive but then again most deejays tailor their sets to the places and the crowds they play for. I cannot wait till Sander Kleinenberg returns to Toronto, probably in early 2003 on his new global underground mix tour.
