© copyright @ i:VibesOne of the leading DJ´s and producers, Paul Oakenfold, takes some time out to answer a couple of questions we had for him!

Hi Paul, thanks for taking time out to do this interview for us, now let’s get down to business.

i:Vibes: How are you doing today?
I’m well thank you.

i:Vibes: Are you one of the persons who think that Ibiza lost its magic of party-island, now with all the superclubs. In the early 90’s there were free open-air parties for open-minded people, and now the government is trying to stop them. What do you think about this?
Paul: Yes I do think it’s a real shame that the government are trying to stop the free parties.

i:Vibes: Following that question: how has Ibiza (and the Perfecto nights @ Pacha) been for you this year?
Paul: Very successful but hard work. It has taken up to 10 hours to get there! I have already decided that I won’t be continuing next year.

i:Vibes: Can you tell us how a week looks for you? With all the producing and DJ gigs, how many hours on planes, hotels, …
Paul: Each week differs, sometimes I’m in the studio, sometimes in the office and other times I’m touring…I’m usually very busy though!

i:Vibes: And now a little more about Bunnka.

i:Vibes: After years of producing, remixing, and having dj sets all over the world, you finally released your very first artist album: Bunnka.
Opinions were divided into two camps. On the one hand you had people praising you, cause the album wasn’t what they expected, you didn’t stay with the style you mostly play in DJ sets, but you set sail for new horizons, discovering new sounds… But on the other hand, people were claiming that you sold out, cause you produced an album that appealed to the masses rather then the true fans.
What’s your view on this?
Paul: I see it as an album that represents me over the years. I set out to make a melodic dance album. There are dance remixes on all of the singles too.

i:Vibes: Do you feel that you embarked into a new area now you’ve had your first artist album behind you?
Paul: Yes that’s exactly what I wanted to do – to move forward, not back.

i:Vibes: On Bunnka, you cooperated with a lot of different artists which led to unique songs. Nelly Furtado, Ice Cube, Shifty Shellshock (singer of Crazy Town). How big is the influence of the singers. And how did the collaboration go exactly?
Paul: The influence of the singers is not as big as the influence of the song…I always wanted to write my own artist album which is hard because I’m not a singer…

i:Vibes: Are there any other plans of producing a second album? If so, will it be in the same style?
Paul: Not at present.

i:Vibes: Which album had the most influence on you, now, or when growing up, cause the album changed the way you thought about music, or simply cause it opened your eyes to a new sound?
Paul: Nothing stands out in particular, there have been all sorts of influences. I grew up with my dad playing the Beatles and Elvis…

i:Vibes: Who do you think is the most inspiring DJ of 2002 so far?
Paul: Hernan Cattaneo

i:Vibes: Where is Perfecto headed for the end of 2002 and 2003. One of the big releases in the future is without a doubt Flesh 2002, but releasing little gems like Mach 747 – Invading Privately, and 29 Palms – Touch The Sky, only adds to the popularity of the label.
Paul: To continue signing and releasing Quality Dance Music

i:Vibes: Perfecto had a sub-label, Perfecto Fluoro, which was at the forefront of releasing psy/goa songs, just think about your Gold & Silver Mixes, which are phenomenal. Are there any plans for future releases?
Paul: No

Paul, thanks a lot for answering those question, and keep doing what you do best: bringing us fine trance :)
