Andy Perring tells us a bit about plans for Insigma, the Pulser re-releases, and also possible collaborations? Read about it here!
Hi Andy,
Great to see that everything's alive and well and it¡¦s been just over half a year since we last met for this interview and things are heating up for you at around this time.
i:Vibes: So why not give us a bit of an update of what¡¦s been happening in your life since February in terms of thought of mind, holidays, or anything else you might have been up to?
Andy: For someone that¡¦s terrified of flying, I¡¦ve done my fair share of it this year. I made return trips (several times) to play in Japan, Canada, the US and mainland Europe. I did manage a few days away with my girlfriend to Ibiza where I met up with Armin, Matt darey and Graham Gold but it ended up being a busman¡¦s holiday.
As for my state of mind, this year I¡¦ve been driven insane by my new mixing desk and software but other than that I¡¦ve had a fantastic year and its getting better every week!
i:Vibes: In terms of your music, you've worked on a fairly large amount of remixes since the early part of 2002 including that of Dee Dee, Blue Horizon and Dario G, all of which have been superb remixes. Want to say something about those remixes?
Andy: Thanks for the compliment! I haven¡¦t really done a lot of mixes this year; the record companies have a habit of releasing my remixes all at the same time so it just looks that way.
It seems so long ago that did the mixes you mentioned. The Dario G mix was actually done in 2001 but due to reasons unknown to me it has only just emerged on import.
I think the Dee Dee remix was a spin-off after the success of my Matt Darey remix. I have a good relationship with Incentive Records who Dee Dee and Matt are signed to and I¡¦m hoping to work with them again on future projects and remixes. Blue Horizon was a great track to remix. I¡¦ve always respected Mike Koglin¡¦s work. It was a lot different than his previous material but a good track to get my teeth into, also it was the first time I had worked with Credence/Mainline. It¡¦s always good to work with new labels.
i:Vibes: Speaking of the Dario G remix, any signs of that coming out on a retail pressing?
Andy: Haven¡¦t got a clue.
i:Vibes: You worked on a track with Stuart Lange under the Atacama guise which has seen a number of limited releases during spring of this year, will we be seeing more of that chunky yet uplifting material from yourself and Lange? And how did that idea come into play to begin with?
Andy: The Bass Tarts project was just a bit of fun. Lange is a good friend and we¡¦re always invading each other¡¦s studios so it was inevitable that we would try out some joint ideas. We decided to do something different and use more loops and samples than we normally would in our own productions. The track wasn¡¦t planned to sound like that but we¡¦re happy with the outcome. As for future tracks, we probably won¡¦t do another Bass tarts record but we are planning to hook-up on something Trancey very soon. i:Vibes: Back to arguably your two most famous releases "Cloudwalking" and "Open Your Eyes", we are beginning to see the 1st of 2 discs of Open Your Eyes being released on ATCR and word has it that Cloudwalking is coming with a meaty remix package later this year. How do you feel about this re-release?
Andy: Very happy. I¡¦m still getting emails and requests to play Cloudwalking and It will be good to see it finally come out again. The other thing is that I now have my own copy to play, which is nice ƒº The big boys are hammering the Beatpusher remix and the other mixes will follow soon.
Open our eyes pt1 came out on ATCR a week ago and is nearly out of stock again. Pt 2 will be out very soon.
i:Vibes: How has the industry changed since we last spoke with you in February? In terms of music styles and productions?
Andy: A lot. I think the Trance thing didn¡¦t really happen as people (including myself) forecast but it still came back very strong. My own productions are evolving and I¡¦m getting more Techno influenced but I still write Trance tunes. I¡¦m getting some interesting results combining the two styles but I¡¦m still leaning more towards anthemic sounds rather than deep stuff. I¡¦m not about to jump ship.
i:Vibes: Godskitchen is a big date for a lot of people to look forward to and it seems like you're having a large number of gigs at the end of this year. Is this the start of Pulser as a DJ?
Andy: Gods is a massive date for me especially. I haven¡¦t played a lot of dates in the UK so it¡¦s an honour to play for my home crowd in such a great club and be part of such a great line-up. I think this will be seen as the start of my main stream Djing career purely because of the profile clubs like Gods will give me. I have been Djing for a couple of years in Europe, Japan, Canada, US etc and love doing it but I¡¦m getting excited about playing more in the UK.
i:Vibes: And finally, the question which many have been asking is "What remixes and productions has Andy got up his sleeve next"? What upcoming tracks are there for 2003 and are there any new projects to look forward to?
Andy: As ever I can¡¦t be too specific because of the ¡¥spanner in the works¡¦ scenario but I do have new Pulser material ready to go after the Cloudwalking re-release. Also, as I mentioned earlier I will be working with Lange very soon and will hopefully get together with Steve (Thrillseekers) again for a new Insigma track in the early part of 2003.
I¡¦m not planning any new projects but I¡¦ve met-up up with one or two very well known European producers and time permitting we will do some work together. I¡¦m cutting back on the remix front to concentrate more on my own work, DJing and on Activation Records but I will still do the odd one or two that interest me.
On the DJ front, check the website (www.cloudwalking.com) for some big news about NYE soon.
i:Vibes: Any last words of wisdom as 2002 reaches its latter quarter of the year?
Andy: Be happy! That¡¦s an order!!
Cheers Andy
Thanks, Anytime!
