'Well here it is, the long awaited follow up single from Odessi. After kicking things off for Baroque back at the start of 2000 with their monster hit 'Moments In Space' ... Odessi (AKA Parks & Wilson and Leama) have hid themselves away and worked on their own projects. Here are the remixes to the original in the first of a two parter!
"Right now the guys are putting the finishing touches to their second single release for us in the form of 'Beautiful Malika'.. for the remix here we enlisted the help of the king of Spin guys, and as they delivered their mixes first we thought we'd keep you waiting no longer and deliver the first 12".
As usual the King Of Spin guys have delivered a top notch pair of mixes that have been blowing up everywhere of the limited test pressings around.. their vocal mix is full of intricate synth lines & cool filtered percussion, add to that the original vocal and you have the peak time floor filler... while the dub on the flip takes things to a techy driving trip.. take you pick..."
- Baroque Press Release
A: King Of Spin Vocal Mix The mix starts out in typical king of spin style.. driving bassy undertones with a contrasting high hat to make the track groovy. The mix begins to build on the two layers by increasing the volume of a synth'esque melody which chuggs along with the pace of the bass. Their is a distorted vocal which bcomes more and more vident as the track progresses. It has a mini break to add another filter -in the form of a quirky effect. the layers compliment each other-as there arent many -but they have a bold sound which punches the bassline. The mid section demonstrates a sample which reminds me of an ibiza sample.. but fits really well into the whole feel created by King Of Spin. The breakdown is reached with the soft melody and the distorted vocal in key position. The melody changes and the vocal becomes slightly more clear.. it is like a chant of a monk!.. a mini 'zapping' effect sees the bassline and all its layers reach full pace again.. the high hat sequence changes to give a more skippy sound, but again - it maintains interest and stops the track from becoming boring in the latter stages..an excellent track-and great mix from King Of Spin.
B: King Of Spin Dub The dub shows a different side to the King Of Spin vocal. It is deeper and more meaningful than that of the vocal mix. The sounds are all very low and haunting. The mix starts out on a quite minimal note.. but holds in place to distorted chant. Tinny effects are aded to the shuffling highs which lay beneath the bassline -not really evident. The track cuts to a chilling break.. distorting the vocal in yet another way -which holds the beat sequence within the melody. The track is only very short -and as the mid section is raised it is chugging with the sounds that have made the track so far -along with an electronic whisp - to add a different tone to the mix -contrasting the low groovy sounds.
