Mike Koglin, who has recently been locked away in his studio has found some time to talk to us about his upcoming tracks, his past tracks, Darren Tate and Kirsty Hawkshaw.
Hi there Mike, Thanks for the time to do this interview and its greatly appreciated.
i:Vibes Do tell us about how 2002 has gone for you so far? And what it has been like to remix great tracks such as the classic "Fine Day" now sung by Kirsty Hawkshaw
Mike: This year has been really happening so far! I've been working pretty closely with Credence/Mainline who signed several of my productions this year, one of them being my remake of 'Fine Day'. I got approached by Kirsty - who was the original singer on the '92 Opus 3 classic earlier this year and she told me of her idea to re-release Fine Day.
My original approach was actually a bit on the progressive side but then I did a new, trancier version (with the help from Jono Grant from Above & Beyond) which is the version you hear on the 12inch and the radio edit. It will be released November 11th on Mainline/EMI.
i:Vibes And also, you worked with a great producer this year Darren Tate, putting out "Now Is the Time", how was that experience like?
Mike: Darren and I met while DJing out in Japan last year and since then we've been working on several studio projects including 'Now Is The Time'. It got great reactions from all the DJ's and clubbers alike and we're currently writing a few more tunes which will be released next year.
i:Vibes You've been producing music for much of the 90s and the past few years so you've had a view on how music has evolved, and how your own tastes have evolved. Has this change been good? or is the music industry in general reaching a saturation point?
Mike: I guess everybody and everything is constantly going through a process of constant change, and this is particularly obvious in music. It still amazes me how quickly productions that are maybe only a couple of years old sound dated! I guess certain styles will always come back round again after a while in a slightly modified form, whether it's Trance or Disco or 80's Electro or whatever. But I guess at the moment people in the music industry are holding their breath and everyone is waiting for the 'next big thing' to come along...
i:Vibes How did the summer go? Did you get a chance to head off to Ibiza?
Mike: To be honest I didn't get to see much sun this summer - always in the studio! Even gave Ibiza a miss this year....
i:Vibes You have a few tracks coming out on Avex in Japan. How did you end up putting tracks out for the Asia market when its still in its early growth period? And are there plans for more?
Mike: Last year Avex/Japan asked me to remix one of their artists - Ayumi Hamasaki - who is somewhat of the 'Madonna' of Asia.
Since then I've done a few more remixes for them, and they've also licensed a couple of my tunes. Trance is absolutely massive in Japan at the moment, I just got back from playing at Code in Tokyo and it's great to see how big the whole club scene has become over there. Avex is the biggest record company in Japan and we're planning to continue our close working relationship.
i:Vibes Working under numerous guises including the upcoming Eden Project (which is with Darren Tate as well), Blue Horizon with Rohan Heath and also your more uptempo K-Lab for example, how do you approach the different music styles and is there a favourite guise of yours?
Mike: As there are so many different shades of dance music it makes sense to release different styles under different guises. It's also useful to separate all the different projects as some of them are more underground like for example 'Now Is The Time' and some are more commercial like the Blue Horizon stuff.
One of my all time favourite tunes of mine is actually a pretty tough but funky House tune called 'Monkey Lover' which came out last year under the name of 'Silverback' as a very limited release on Serious Records. I could imagine it'd be quite hard to get hold of by now...
i:Vibes We haven't seen an artist album yet from you, any plans for that?
Mike: No not really. I think the whole dance music thing is all about vinyl and compilation albums. I don't think too many people buy albums by just one artist anymore. To write and produce an album is a very time consuming process and I'd rather use the time to concentrate on 5 or 6 single productions which will eventually end up on a lot of compilations.
i:Vibes You began your music career in Germany before moving to the UK to develop it further. Many have asked, "Where is Mike originally from"?. Have you an answer for them?
Mike: I grew up in West Germany in a small-ish town called Bonn, which is one of the reasons why I decided to come to London in 1990...
i:Vibes What more do you want to tell us about upcoming productions, tracks and news?
Mike: The next release in the UK is of course 'Fine Day' (11.nov.'02), and there will be another tune out in December on Conception Records called 'Forever And A Day' which I did under the name of 'State One'. Otherwise I'm busy in the studio working on yet more Trance and House productions. For next year though I'm planning to do a lot more DJing 'cause I love being out of the studio once in a while...
i:Vibes Any final words of wisdom for those amateur producers and to music lovers out there?
Mike: Go out and mingle, it's all about meeting the right people!
We thank Mike Koglin for his time and would like to highlight that "Fine Day" is out on Mainline / EMI in just under a week.
