German trancemaster Paul van Dyk talks to i:Vibes about his life, his career and his new album, "The Politics of Dancing."
-Tell us a little bit about yourself: (age, where you come from, your music background, your influences in trance, style of music you play?, and perhaps a bit about your hobbies, all the stuff, and maybe something we don't know yet)
Paul: "I'm 29 right now but getting 30 in December When I was young i listen in East Germany to West Berlin Radio stations and music like New Order, Morrisey etc. When I started to go out, I really like this kind of Detroit Techno stuff because of the energy but something was missing for me, so that's why I did some mix tapes for myself and gave it to friends and they gave it to the promoter of the Tresor club."
-What do you consider the most important aspect of your life?
Paul: "Staying healthy and On the ground."
-Favorite tune of the moment? Favorite tune ever?
-Paul: "Favorite at the moment would be NU NRG - 'Dreamland', this song is so amazing and currently signed on VANDIT. My favorite all time would be Massive Attack - 'Unfinished Symphathy'."
-What can you tell us about your new DJ Mix Album "The Politics of Dancing"? Will there be a Vinyl version (LP) as "Vorsprung Dyk Technik" ?
Paul: "This is my first Mix CD in 8 years. I don't really like to make Mix CDs because you don't have the interaction with the crowd, the vibe, you are sit in a studio choosing the tracks you are going to use for the mixing and then, go and mix the cd. But, i made this some kind of different as an usual Mix cd, i took the essentials parts of a track, and the remixed or re-worked so it would be as i want it to be, so you might find new bassline as for example." "And NO, there won't be a Vinyl version of it. The tracks on the album are mixed and reworked specially for the Ministry of Sound CD, so there won't be a record (LP) version of it. Maybe in the future VANDIT could release some of the remixes i made for this album as Second Sun's Empire and Solid Sleep's Club Attack."
-Do you have any plans for future Productions? Another Album as "Out There and Back"?
Paul: YES. "I have an upcoming Single planned to be out on May 2002, in which I'm working now. Also, I'm producing a new artist/producer album and it will be available on September 2002."
-What is the aim of the VANDIT label, and where is it heading in the future?
Paul: "To release records we like and moving on." ;)
-Your song "For An Angel" is considered one of the best trance songs ever. Do you have any plans on doing another remix of it as for example a "VANDIT Mix"?
Paul: "This is a good idea, but yet, i don't think it needs a new remix."
-Where do you get inspiration to write your songs, or how you get for writing them?
Paul: "I could say from life, in general. Also from Travelling and experiencing new things around the world."
-Would you do another song featuring your wife Natascha as the vocalist?
Paul: YES, of course. There will more songs in which my wife will make the vocals."
-What equipment do you have in your studio to produce your songs and remix other artists?
Paul: "You can see some of the equipment i use in my studio on the list below:"
G4 Macintosh / AudioLogic / ProTools 24 Roland Juno 60 / 106 JD 800 TB 303 TR 808 TR 909 Virus Supernova Korg Prophecy Korg Trinity JP 8000 Behringer Kompression Mackie Digital D8B Emu Extreme 1 K2500 Syntechno Nordlead Diverse Effects -What is your opinions and suggestion about the Clubs being 21 years and over in the world?? Do you think that can be bad for Big DJs like you?
Paul: "Well, there will always be different laws in different countrys, for example: Germany - 18, but I guess thats how it is; there's nothing we can do about that."
-You remixed Underworld's "Born Slippy" and Sound De-zign's "Happiness". You have played them in some of your gigs but they have never been released. Will they have a chance to be released?
Paul: "NO, Because these were Demo Mixes i did for some of my gigs last year and this year. The reason i did this was because i liked those songs but i thought something was missing. So i went to my studio and remixed it so it would sound as i want to sound. But again, this will not be released for anyone else than me."
-Paul, we talked to Armin van Buuren and asked him what he would think about producing a song together with you. He answered us that he will be looking foward on that? Do you think this can be made sometime in the future?
Paul: "YES. Armin is a very talented DJ/Producer, for example, his song Alibi "Eternity" is a very good song. It sounds good to me to make a track with him in the future."
