It was a cold night in November, but the lineup was hot as usual at Godskitchen in Birmingham, as they brought us a "European Producers Night," a concept where each DJ is only allowed to play their own productions.
The Lineup:
21.30 - 23.00 Jon 'O Bir 23.00 - 00.30 Dumonde 00.30 - 02.30 M.I.K.E 02.30 - 04.30 Marco V 04.30 - 06.00 Joy Kitikonti
Jon 'O Bir did a great job of warming us up for a great night ahead. Just because you are playing a warmup set doesn't mean you have to play boring tunes, and I guess Jon 'O Bir believes this to :) His set kept us all on our feet, and his mixing was very good. Expect big things in 2003 from this superb up and coming DJ. He also had the decency to share a tracklist with us, which can be seen below:
01. Conjure One - Tears from the Moon (Hybrid's Dub Remix) 02. Digital Mind Control - Mindstate 03. Nova - Terma 04. Export Audio - Girl FX 05. Ernest v Bastian - Being Single (Mind Markers Remix) 06. Mark Lowndes - No other love 07. Airwave - Lightspeed 08. Purple and ronan - Future Blue 09. James Holden - Nothing (Returning 93 remix) 10. Greed - Strange World (Lemon 8 Remix) 11. Meridian - Reach the stars 12. Dj Fire - Jetlag 13. Katana - Alesis
DuMonde up next. Personally I think Godskitchen put these guys on way to early. It's official though. This goes down as one of the best sets in the history of trance. DuMonde have some amazing tracks to their name, and a set full of their own productions was enough to almost kill me. They started with Binary Finary - 2000 (DJ JamX & De Leon's Millennium Mix). An all time classic. As you can imagine, as the first beat kicked in everyone went wild. The lasers and strobe lights pounding. I've never seen Godskitchen so packed so early on in the evening. It was great. Next they played Steve Morley - Reincarnations (Jam X & De Leon's Remix) and a little while after CRW - I Feel Love (DJ JamX & De Leon Remix), one of a few tracks that originally got me into trance in the first place. The mixing between tracks was flawless. They continued to destroy the crowd with classic after classic such as Angelic - Can't Keep Me Silent (DuMonde Remix), ELT - Rescue me (Dumonde Mix), Lange - Follow Me (DuMonde Mix), DuMonde vs. Lange - Memory, etc. The set was mainly made up of oldies, but they did include a few new productions, such as their Remix of Rank 1 - Symsonic, which I am glad to report is definitely a contender for tune of the year ;) It was coming towards the end of their set, and I truly didn't want it to stop until we'd had the pleasure of hearing every single DuMonde production ever created. Unfortunately their discography is so huge I knew this would be impossible. They played the anthem Ayumi Hamasaki - Trauma (DuMonde Instrumental) and finally finished with DuMonde - Tomorrow, both tracks that sound amazing live. After their set they came outside the DJ Booth to meet the fans, and stayed and partied with us throughout the whole of M.I.K.E's set. The sooner these guys return to the UK the better :)
After hearing M.I.K.E play at the NEC a couple weeks back, I had high expectations. I was very happy to hearing him spin more of his uplifting productions rather than his more darker and progressive work. He played some quality tracks such as Push - Universal Nation, and also the 2002 Rework of Universal Nation, and also played Push - Till We Meet Again, a track I have wanted to hear live for so long. M.I.K.E is a superb DJ. His mixing always spot on, and he really gets into his sets. He is very enthusiastic behind the decks, dancing away, and making the atmosphere so much better. I love to see a DJ enjoy the night as much as the fans. Only downside to his set was that he did not play the 2000 remake of Strange World. I can't believe it :( He did play the HH Remix, but it's just not the same as the 2000 remake. All in all a great set from M.I.K.E, although I really think he should have come on before DuMonde. I'm not sure what went wrong here. Quite a big mistake on behalf of Godskitchen :(
Marco V up next. This was the first time I have had the pleasure of hearing him spin, so I was very excited. He played a mixture of oldies and also some of his latest tracks from his Con:fusion Album Sampler 2, such as Marco V - Echoes. I must say I was very impressed with his mixing, although some of tracks he played were really not my style, and I failed to recognise quite a few of them. However he did play Marco V - Simulated which I went rather mad to :) and he also played Atlanta 02-02-2002 a track often caned by Paul van Dyk. As you can imagine, the crowed erupted when he played Godd, and a little later he played a bootleg of Godd that I had never heard before, which some random girl told me was called Marco V vs Faithless - Godd Is A DJ. Best track of his set though, and a contender for track of the night went to his remix of Cafe Del Mar.
Last set of the night was Joy Kitikonti. Before his set he was on the dance floor meeting fans, and taking pictures with his Digital Camera. His set started as he meant to go on. Hard and banging. His mixing was flawless, and at times I failed to realise that he had even brought in a new track. Some of the tracks he played though very very repetitive. Played some stormers thought such as Joy Energizer and Joy Don't Stop. I'm not too familiar with his productions, but after hearing his set I definitely would like to explore some more of his tracks.
So this turned out to be a great night out. Set of the night for me was definitely DuMonde's. I can't get over how many great productions they have. And Godskitchen is an amazing club with an awesome sound system, and quality lighting. I can't wait to return for Future Gods Part 2 in January :D
