Everybody dreams of making it as a DJ, playing in your bedroom to the cat and goldfish and imagining it was 3000 people... Well for some the dream does become reality, as Jon O'Bir has recently found out, here he speaks to us about all that's happened!

i:Vibes For those people outside the UK, could you give us some ground
information on yourself please?

Jon O'Bir Well, I am an 18 year old Trance Addict! And I am living my dream of
playing the music I love to big crowds! Born in Nottingham and have
lived here all my life, hopefully now I can spend as much time as
possible away from the place! Haha! And also hopefully travel the
world, so I can share the music I love to you guys overseas!

i:Vibes You are only 18, and have been playing for about 2 years, do you
ever wake up and want to be pinched, to make sure it's not just one
long dream?

Jon O'Bir I think I ask someone to pinch me everyday and I still seem to be a
dreamland! I have worked really really hard on my dj’ing over those 2
years, I sacrificed a lot of things to concentrate on my music, and
now it seems to be paying off for me. But that’s not the end of the
hard work! Still will work harder and harder to keep my position that
I have now.

i:Vibes A lot of your sets involve tunes and remixes by Amateur producers,
do you think that there is a lot of talent out there?

Jon O'Bir There are loads and loads of talent out there! I am Robert Nickson’s
number 1 fan, the productions he has sent me have been amazing, I am
predicting big things from him and I will keep on pushing him to get
up off his arse and get CD’s sent out to record labels (I know your
reading this Robert heh) as he is yet unsigned which I find
unbelievable! Another guy I am predicting big things from is Finne (i:Vibes Crew Member!)
and his mate Gerwin, big progressive tunes that I will continue to
push. Keep up the good work guys!

i:Vibes How did you get your breakthrough?

Jon O'Bir My first breakthrough was given to me by my good friend now St John
earlier this year, I sent him a CD he liked it and after hearing me a
few times he gave me my first gig experience and also my 1st
residency John has turned me into a much more confident person and I
cannot thank enough for the help John, Jamo and the m.o.tion crew
have given me. My 2nd big break was winning the PaSSion & M8 Mag DJ
competition, big thanks go out to Dan Platten and all the guys that
judged the final! And the recent breakthrough has been Godskitchen. I
sent a CD off to them and received a reply from James Algate @ Gods
telling me he liked my CD and that he wanted to meet me! Again
massive thanks to James for all he has offered me, I won’t let you
down.

i:Vibes Playing at Godskitchen and Passion will allow you to play amongst
the very best in the world, who is your hero and who would you love
to play alongside for the night ?

Jon O'Bir My hero has to be Armin! I look up to this guy and one day hope top
be in a similar position that he is now. Who would I love to play
alongside? So many people! But Armin has to be up there.

i:Vibes Is there Jon O'Bir the producer too, talents we don't yet know
about, or are you just happy to concentrate on your DJing at the
moment?

Jon O'Bir There is Jon the producer! Watch this space :op

i:Vibes There are thousands of bedroom DJs like you started out as, do
you have any advice on them, for commitment and techniques and the
likes?

Jon O'Bir I know it’s the oldest advice in the book but.. Practice, practice
and practice! I have had my share of luck on the way, but DON’T GIVE
IN! Keep at it, maybe sacrifice some things like I did? But only do
that if you LOVE the music you play.

i:Vibes As someone who's involved with a lot of up & coming DJs at the
parties you've played, who else would you say we should look out for?

Jon O'Bir If you see the names – Andy Bagguley, Russell G, Dave C, St John,
Danny M, John Wright – on a flyer then get to that club night! So
many quality young DJ’s that need to break through! Its time for
fresh talent to keep clubland alive!

Many Thanks to Jon for taking the time out for this, Keep tuned for updates on where he will be playing, and good luck to him for 2003 :)
