Dirty Vegas, the house trio from the UK have recently released their "A Night At the Tables" compilation CD, bringing something fresh and different for 2003.

Paul Harris, Steve Smith and Ben Harris are three lads from Kent and the South London suburbs with very different musical backgrounds, united by a shared passion for house music. This is the mix CD which came forth on Ultra Records just not too long ago and contains 13 tracks of dirty house and funky progression.

Tracklist:

01 . Love At First Sight - Kylie Minogue (Scumfrog mix)
02 . Dark Beat - Oscar G/Ralph Falcon
03 . 2 Months Off - Underworld
04 . See - Starecase (Timo Maas mix)
05 . Keep On Moving - Frankie Knuckles/Nicki Richards
06 . Changes - Sandy Rivera/Haze
07 . Ghosts - Dirty Vegas (MAS Collective Vocal mix)
08 . Be Yourself (And No One Else) (Part 1) - Celeda
09 . Temptation - Vibe Residents/Dragonfly
10 . Know For Sure - 10 Silo Deep (Smokemirror dub)
11 . Talking About The Revolution - 440 Central
12 . Coffee Beats Vol. 2 - Del Gado
13 . I Should Know - Dirty Vegas (Alex Neri club mix)

We begin with the somewhat familiar voice of Kylie Minogue and what appears to be a very dubbed out version of "Love At First Sight" featured by a remix from the guys at the moment Scumfrog who recently superbly remixed Iio's "At the End". This remix brings up a male vocal whisper alongside Kylie's vox which is quite distracting to listen to but the electronic vibe and buzz of bassline is definitely an appealing start. I guess the aptly titled "...Beauty and the Beast.. Mix" highlights the fact of matching Kylie's vocals with that of... a beast?

Saying that about the first track vocals, it complements the next track in the lineup "Dark Beat", a funky and sublime vocal track with some interesting vocals which would be very addictive in a club, complete with bells, chimes and what some could describe as resembling the "Junior Vasquez" bassline a few years ago. Can't find it? Then ride it....

Underworld's 2 Months off adds more of the UK vibe which this track has been creating ever since its release. A track hard to describe with words, this uplifting, summery, dance floor friends but yet seemingly repetitive and you either hate this track or you love it.

Towards the end of "2 Months", you can already feel darkness creeping in from the upcoming Timo Maas Remix of Starecase's "See". An almost techno house track which creeps along with its elastic bounces and subliminal bass and an indie like vocal.

The godfather of house Frankie Knuckles combined with King Unique puts in one of the highlights of the mix with his "Keep on Moving" in which Dirty Vegas puts in a few extra elements with an Acapella from DM Binxter "Moody", making this track definitely one with a moody vibe. Going from a relaxed atmosphere and building towards an uplifting afterhours feel, back down to a somewhat sublime and sad tone before breaking off into a sexy finale before falling into the steps of Sandy Rivera and vocalist Haze in "Changes"; an offering from 2002 which changes the mood of mix considerably with an almost retro feel which brings back the vibe of earlier last decade in the house scene.

Dirty Vegas' very own "Ghosts" follows up soon after with a definitive techno/house/progressive borderline track which calms the elements but moving up the pace in an atmospheric track which shifts the CD up a gear before we reach the electro housey haunts of Celeda's "Be Yourself" with gospel vocals which I felt didn't quite go with the track, or perhaps it was in the wrong portion of the compilation...

Temptation is a truly funked up and rocking track which would suit the likes of DJs like Deep Dish, Danny Tenaglia and others with a pounding bassline which if the volume was escalated up to its highest limits would wreck havoc with the crowds; but it doesn't stop there.. Silo Deep's "Know For Sure" with its Smokemirror Dub continues the pounding and distorted vocals and keeps the dance floors, or your speakers rocking as the CD pushes to its peak hour, even contemplating the infusion of breakbeat which is something I rarely hear these days in a mix like this.

It's soon after that you hear what I can only describe as either a Xylophone or some Latin instrument creating the vibe for "Talking About the Revolution", which is a very late 70s/early 80s kind of house track, using yet again the gospel like vocals and housey bassline to offset the pounding from the previous 2 tracks. But if you thought that that was the end of the the pounding, you have more 4/4 beats coming from "Coffee Beats Vol.2" by Del Gado which would remind you of the mambo or something similar with a latin vibe, signalling towards the end of our journey with the Dirty Vegas Sound System.

The boys finish off with their own track "I Should Know" featuring Alex Neri's Club Mix in a rounded finish featuring vocals which sound a bit like the singer hasn't completely woken up yet, but the production itself made up for that fact and Dirty Vegas round the compilation off nicely with this cool finish. Now, lets swap that last remix for a dub shall we?

A different compilation to most that I have heard over the years and this is one I believe would suit all listeners, from fans of Dirty Vegas, or those who are looking to start listening to the house/techno vibe they push forward. A variety of different tracks blended nicely together which is definitely novelty to compilation mix CDs, something which we are seeing less and less off over the years.

7.5/10 from myself and I am sure that this CD presents mixed opinions, so lets see what you think...
