Slacker joins the Broadcast for the first time! Slacker is DJ and producer Shem McCauley. Shem was known as DJ Streets Ahead in the mid-Eighties when he was one of the UK¹s leading scratch mix DJs. His skills earned him the first live mix on radio in the UK (with Tim Westwood on pirate LWR) and deck battles at the legendary Hammersmith Palais, as well as production work with Professor Griff (Public Enemy) and Tim Simenon (Bomb the Bass). While studying in Brighton, Shem made records and ran clubs with Norman Cook, and played acid-house sets at warehouse parties hosted by Carl Cox. He soon became a much in-demand remixer, working on James Brown, Roxanne Shante, Was Not Was, Digital Underground and many others. Shem formed Ramp in the early 90s with musician Simon Rogers, enjoying success with the club classics "Rock the Discotek" and "Stomp" on the Loaded label, as well as remixes for D:Ream, Grace Jones, Sister Sledge, Armand Van Helden, Strike, Yazz and Boy George to name just a few. On his own Shem slowly became Slacker, eager to offload some of his darker samples and capture the atmospheres he'd encountered on trips to Goa and Thailand. First came "Feel Space" and "Jukebox In The Sky", then "Flying Baby" - all critically acclaimed underground club hits. His third single "Scared" was a powerful, atmospheric house groove that captured the current mood perfectly, and generated a huge buzz even though for five months only one copy existed - in the capable hands of DJ Sasha. By the beginning of 1997 it was a top 40 hit. "Your Face" was the follow-up, then "Psychout". In 1998/9 Shem took time out for a return to his first love, the decks. He began regular DJ tours around the world to promote the Slacker sound. During this time he set up his own label, Jukebox In The Sky records as well as crafting more remixes for the likes of Bedrock, Breeder, Think Tank, Andy Ling, Junkie XL, Tracnesetters and Adamski and most recently Moby's "In This World". Slacker's "Looky Thing", and Head Honcho's "Walls of Jericho" were both released in 2002 on Jukebox In The Sky and received much positive attention. Keep an eye out for his next single "A Million Dreams/Slip N Slide" to be released later this year. Check out www.jukeboxinthesky.co.uk for more details.
The Murk boys are here! Oscar G and Ralph Falcon, the men behind some of the hottest dance hits like "Fired Up" and "Dark Beat" brought us this slamming set. The duo's rise to music glory begain in the early 90's after producing a single called "Tricky Jazz" for the local DSR Records. Gaetan and Falcon then followed in 1992 with Mission Control's "Outta Limits", which appeared on an Atlantic compilation. By that time the pair had already set up Murk Recordings and released singles as Intruder and Interceptor. Their next production was Liberty City's "Some Lovin'," with singer Bebe Dozier. The single broke them to an international audience, and the Murk boys were soon being called on to DJ around the world. In 1993 Tribal America picked up the entire Murk catalogue and issued the Murk singles collection. At the same time, Oscar and Ralph released another Liberty City single, "If You Really Love Someone" and another smash club hit was born. During 1999, "Fired Up" and "The Way" was released under the moniker Funky Green Dogs. At the same time their mix cd "Murk Starring iI Miami Vice" was released on United DJs Of America. Now in 2003, the latest chapter of the Murk story has been written with the release of "Dark Beat". And the rest, as they say, is history.
