Jolz, Phil, and the rest of the AU.Ninja guys visited Two Tribes in Melbourne last weekend, Find out here a full report from it!!

Two Tribes 2003 according to Jolene, Phil and the rest of the Melbourne trancEaddict crew!

Two Tribes, Australia’s largest dance festival came to Melbourne for the final leg of the 2003 tour. 18,000 partygoers. Over 60 DJs. 6 Arenas. We were in store for one hell of a night!

First stop: NuBreed, one of Australia’s hottest dance acts, with success overseas as well as at home. We didn’t manage to see the whole of their set, but what we heard was definitely making the crowd excited, and they were a great warm up for Dave Seaman. After an hour of some fresh prog and breaks, they were done and it was time for the first international of the night for us.

Dave Seaman came on next, and much to the delight of the crowd he was adorned in a Harry Kewell Socceroos guernsey! We couldn’t stay for long but he and the crowd were enjoying it, a couple of noticeable tracks included the latest Planet Funk and the Brothers in Rhythm remix of ‘Staring at the Sun’ by U2.

We left Dave Seaman after getting a SMS that the queue for the Godskitchen arena was an hour long! Sorry Dave if you read this, but Armin is more important than you! After struggles with security we eventually found our way in through the last open doors, other members of the crowd going for more unconventional methods such as charging the doors and breaking them down! Finally inside, we were greeted with a packed tennis centre dancing away to the nrg sound of the Warp Brothers.

As we heard the Marco V remix of Café del Mar, it is not suprising everyone was having a good time! Other highlights included Faithless – Insomnia, Jurgen Vries – The Theme (Dumonde Remix) and Marc et Claude – Loving You. If you like harder nrg style music this was the place to be, and the view from the stand was spectacular, with a sea of people jumping around to the beat and a great light show to go with it.

When they left, so did half the crowd as Pee Wee Ferris came on, one of Sydney’s premier hard-nrg DJs. We didn’t pay much attention to him as we were too busy chatting to ourselves and counting down the minutes to the man of the moment, Armin van Buuren, and he was pretty much playing the same set we just heard anyway! We made our way to the floor to take up position front row centre with the rest of the Melbourne trancEaddict crew in attendance. The biggest cheers were reserved for Armin as soon as he popped his head around, so sorry Pee Wee if you thought we cheering you on for more. (cheering you off is more likely ;) ).

As soon as he was there the chants began: “Armin! Armin! Armin!”. Much to the dismay of the MC who tried in vein to introduce him to the crowd! If half the crowd didn’t know who he was then shame on them! Everyone crowding the front knew who he was, what he was about to give us and we were not disappointed. After a bit of time to warm up, he was as up for it as much as the crowd was, jumping and dancing around, waving his arms and having a blast. We wanted trance, and trance we got! For three hours Armin delivered, giving our hard-nrg hurt ears a much needed recovery.

People in the crowd communicated with the obligatory TUNE signs, pieces of paper with wanted track names and other less common items such as custom singlets and vinyl covers. Armin communicated back with so many smiles you would think he had plastic surgery on his mouth! One moment in particular stood out as he held up the vinyl of his remix of ‘Seven Cities’ to the little camera facing the decks so everyone could see on the big screens, and everyone went off to the track! Other special moments included hearing ‘Born Slippy’, the new remix of ‘Universal Nation’ and playing the Hiver & Hammer remix of ‘Yet Another Day’ as a finale after we continuously “encouraged” him to play it after waving the vinyl cover at him all night! An almost complete tracklist will follow.

After the great man finished, the place cleared out and we needed to recover so we chilled outside before heading to one of the after parties. One of the local trancEaddicts, Steve Strangis, kept up the great trance at the after party which complemented Armin’s set perfectly. Unfortunately after him it was back to the same old nrg so we left with our hearts content and made our way home to recover. All in all it was a fantastic night, despite the crowd numbers problem, which meant some of our friends missed the first hour or so of Armin. Can’t wait to do it again next year!
