 i:Vibes yesterday got inside information from a well informed source that Hilary Rosen, chairman and chief executive officer of the Recording Industry Association of America has contacted the IFPI regarding an agreement with the biggest mp3-trading organizations in the US and Europe.
Aparently there have been secret meetings between the RIAA and the organizations already. No one is willing to confirm the information we obtained but we have managed to get a hold of the rough draft of the proposed agreement. The mp3-traders must agree to stay clear of the artists and labels represented by the RIAA in return of the written confirmation that no legal action will be taken upon releasing of the other independent and renagade labels in mp3 format. Interestingly enough, even if they're signed on a major label, the Dixie Chicks don't seem to be in the main list of protected artists. Once we started investigating this story all hell broke loose. The agreement was certainly not meant for the public and it has come to our knowledge that the plan was to finalize this deal without anything getting out in the public. We have been contacted by people in the RIAA after we started asking questions and the official statement now is that no deal like this ever existed.... We decided to take this a bit further and wrote a mail to MPAA - Motion Picture Association of America with some questions. The unofficial statement was "interesting" ...
