Go deep into the wild. Learn the truth about 'NYANA'. No more rumors! Why 'NYANA' for his new album? A 2CD album; what does each contain? Read a brief history on Tiesto's success. This and more...
Inspiration can strike at the most unlikely times and places. For internationally acclaimed DJ-producer Tiesto, born Tijs Verwest, the seeds of his new 2-CD mix Nyana were sown far from his home in Holland, or the giant clubs and parties throughout Europe and the U.S. where he has built his steadily escalating reputation.
"A couple months ago, I was in South Africa," he recalls. As part of a rare vacation, he visited an animal preserve. "There was this beautiful cheetah, and her name was Nyana. In the Zulu language, that word means, `The Sun.`" With visions of the animal fresh in his head, he composed the title track of his latest Nettwerk America release. "Nyana," one of the high points of Disc 1, is an expansive trance tune propelled by vibrant melodies, a multi-layered arrangement, and dramatic yet thoughtful shifts in dynamics - precisely the musical elements so integral to Tie"sto`s aesthetic, both behind the decks and in the studio, and qualities which have made him one of the world`s best-loved DJs, as well as a successful producer and sought-after remixer.
With Nyana, Tiesto - named Best International DJ at the DanceStar USA Awards at the Winter Music Conference in Miami this year - was determined to showcase all the facets of his DJ style to their best affect, so he split the program into two distinct halves: "Outdoor" (Disc 1) and "Indoor" (Disc 2). "`The Inside` CD is the warm, slower, more progressive, melodic music I play," he explains, better suited to a more intimate venue or a mellower crowd. "And `The Outside` sounds like how I play at an outdoor festival or a bigger event. It`s a bit harder and faster, with some techno influence, and a little more uplifting."
Along with his trademark trance selections, elements of progressive house, tribal, and techno all weave throughout this set, plus a few choice vocal cuts, most notably Tiesto`s customized remix of "Venus (Meant To Be Your Lover)" by DJ Cor Fijneman featuring Jan Johnston (who previously sang on Tiesto`s "Close To You.") "A DJ has to have surprises," surmises Tiesto of his versatile approach to programming. "I always try to throw in some new tunes, and a variety of styles, into my set." While a couple of these selections, such as "Obsession," a collaboration with Junkie XL taken from Tiesto`s 2002 artist album In My Memory, will be familiar to fans, the majority are exclusive to this compilation, hand-picked from the literally hundreds of tracks producers - both aspiring and established - forward to the Dutch DJ on a daily basis.
Of the two halves of Nyana, Tiesto discloses that CD 2, "The Inside," demanded more of his time and attention to program. "That one features very long, melodic records, and it`s difficult to mix those together, because it`s easy for them go out of tune." But overcoming that challenge highlights one of the more remarkable aspects of Tiesto`s DJ style: His sensitivity in the mix. Over the course of his career, Tiesto has fine-tuned his abilities to select tracks with distinct personalities, and program them in a fashion that emphasizes the unique qualities of each one. His segues, whether protracted or abrupt, marry these carefully chosen cuts in such as way that their union, however fleeting, only intensifies the mood of the moment.
"You could have two DJs play the exact same tunes, but it`s all a matter of timing," concedes Tiesto. "If you time beautiful records wrongly, then it doesn`t sound good, no matter what."
In 2002, Tiesto took a step forward with his debut artist album, In My Memory. This collection of diverse tracks included the highlights "Flight 643", "Lethal Industry," the aforementioned "Obsession," and his signature closing tune, "Suburban Train," all of which met with European chart success, with the latter two breaking into the UK Top 10. With his profile on the rise, he was tapped to remix tracks for a variety of other artists, including Sarah McLachlan, BT, Faithless, Chicane, and Moby. (Alas, his famed remix of "The Space Between," by Dave Matthews Band, remains unreleased.) Moby also asked Tiesto to participate in his Area2 Tour, where he shared the bill with fellow travelers like Carl Cox and John Digweed, as well as headliners including David Bowie.
And momentum only continues to build for Tiesto. In addition to his recent DanceStar USA win; he was also the 2003 recipient of the Radio 538 Publieksprijs, the audience prize from Holland`s biggest independent radio station. He was voted Best DJ in the World by DJ Mag in 2002, and won Best International DJ honors at the DanceStar international ceremony in London last year, too. This summer, from July through September, he`ll serve as the resident headlining DJ for Cream in Ibiza, at the famed Club Amnesia.
The only thing Tiesto`s 2003 schedule probably won`t allow time for is dusting his increasingly full trophy case. But he does plan to add some new stamps to his passport, in between recording the follow-up to In My Memory, during the coming months. "I get a lot of offers nowadays, from all over the world, to play," he says excitedly. "This year, I`m going to take more time to go to places like Asia and Australia, and parts of Europe where I`ve never been."
As always Tiesto will support his release by playing all over the world. For his accurate booking schedule in your territory please check www.primetimemanagement.com or www.tiesto.com.
