Passion 3rd May Review:
Marc West 21:00 – 22:30 Guy Ornadel 22:30 – 00:00 Thrillseekers 00:00 – 01:30 Rank 1 01:30 – 03:00 Above & Beyond 03:00 – 04:30 JFK 04:30 – 06:00
After leaving my hometown of Hinckley at around 9pm, we arrived at Passion at about 9:30. After a little queuing we entered the club and naturally the first thing I do is greet the DJ doing the warm up, 99% of the time it is either one of the two residents: Marc West or JFK. On Saturday it was Marc West. Marc played a good warm up, there is only so much you can do with a warm up set, even more so on an all night event, so nothing too hammering from Marc, but no way a poor set.
Guy Ornadel was next, personally I was a bit surprised at Guy on second, being possibly the hardest DJ on a regular basis, I would have guessed a later slot. Regardless to say he played a quality trance set, nice and flowing with some top tunes to boot.
Thrillseekers (aka Steve Helmstrip), I have already seen Steve once before and his performance was brilliant the first time, and even better this time. Although Steve isn’t new to trance, he is relatively new to DJ’ing, but he is more than skilled enough to take the club scene by storm. With two recent sets at Passion and one coming up in America soon, Steve looks to be taking the DJ’ing very seriously. Steve played a pure trance set, nice and flowing with no poor mixing at all. Steve is a great crowd worker, claps a lot, smiles, jumps around in the DJ booth and is a pleasure to watch DJ and see to DJ. I would highly recommend seeing Steve. Tunes including Insigma – Avalon (the new Insigma track), Eon – Pocket Damage, The Thrillseekers – Synaesthesia, just to name a few.
Rank 1, second gig at Passion in as many months, and next month, they do their third!! Rank 1, only Piet DJ’s but they both turned up to Passion, hours before their slot time and stayed for about 2 hours after to talk to the crowd. I spent about 10 minutes talking to Piet myself and he is a great guy. Piet played a fast paced flowing pumping trance style, Piets music is extremely danceable and with no mixing flaws at all, I love seeing Rank 1 as much as Ferry Corsten! Above & Beyond, again, their second gig in as many months and in true Above and Beyond style, they kept the pure trance theme flowing a treat. Two out of the three turned up, I asked why and they said, “because three in a DJ booth is too many”, which I guess is more than a fair comment. A&B didn’t play as fast as Rank 1, but played more emotional music, such as ‘Far from in Love’ and ‘Beautiful Together’. Infact my mate caused them to argue over Beautiful together, he asked if they were going to play it and he went “shit, its meant to be on now actually!!”, then shouted at the member DJ’ing and said “you’re meant to be playing Beautiful Together now!”, “No I’m not came the reply”, after more arguing it was played next, a new remix infact. A&B stayed in the club till the end after their set, chatting to clubbers and generally hanging around, I spent a while talking to them myself, they show a real intrest to what you’re saying, not just “yes and nod” and walk away. Top guys who played a top set.
JFK was last, he played VERY hard, too hard to be totally honest. After 4.5 hours of pure trance, something a little harder would have been nice, but this was too hard I’m afraid. He played a type of fast paced hard techno sound, it wasn’t bad, but after so long of trance I’m afraid it didn’t sound right.
Tom from Goldenscan was also there that evening, I spent quite some time talking to Dan (Passion’s owner), Marc West and Tom, I asked Tom if he was working on anything new, and he said he was, they have a track on his desk, and even decided to name it on the spot with us three there. This was around 5am so the 4 of us were in abit of a state, so all kinds of stupid names were churned out, like “drunk at the passion bar”, “who the f**k are you standing next to me”, “vodka makes everything alright”, and the names for even worse than that!! What was decided? You’ll have to wait and see ;)
All in all it was one of my best Passion nights ever, if you have never been to Passion it has a real electric atmosphere and IMO is the only club in the country that makes u really feel apart of the action and of the people around.
Thanks to Coup for the Report, and to all the guys at Passion on another great night there!
