Last Friday I was given the task of going to Godskitchen to tell you all about it. It’s a tough job but somebody has to do it! Read on to see how the night went...
Lineup: Petrae Foy: 9.30-11.30 MIKE DJ set: 11.30-12.30 Petrae Foy: 12.30-1.15 Push Live: 1.15-2 John 00 Fleming: 2-6
I got in at about 10.45, greeted by trance, courtesy of Petrae Foy, playing a very decent warm up. He is usually renowned for his blend of hard trance and techno, blended with scratching and various tricks, but this was a far more delicate blend of trance and provided a good warm up for what was to come. Next to take over was MIKE, who came on a little late, but he soon made his mark dropping several trance classics like Andy Ling – Fixation (Airwave Remix) and several of his own productions. Although at times his mixing skills were in question, his ability to play the right tunes was not and he kept the crowd going well for the short time he was on.
Petrae took over the reigns again for a short time, as MIKE went off to prepare for Push live. This set was harder, Petrae Foy playing his own, and made an interesting change in direction for the night. Tracks were cut up and Petrae showed off his scratching skills. The short set added a lot of variety to what could have been a one dimensional night.
Next Push took over to present their live show. This was the first time I had seen a live trance act perform and I think it is great that they are taking a different direction to most producers who just turn to DJing and play all of their own tracks all night! The performance was good, but at times it didn’t have the feel of a live act, it felt like they were doing very little, and sounded almost too perfect. They played several favourites though; Universal Nation certainly got the dance floor moving!
Straight from the back of Push livecame John 00 Fleming, playing a late set for a change that was to bring us right up until 6 in the morning! After starting at a fair pace he gradually and smoothly moved through the gears building the tempo up and up as the music got darker and tougher. One of the hardest parts of a John 00 Fleming set is figuring out what he played, his favourite tracks always appear as “Unknown – Unknown [CD-R]” Even straight after releasing his latest mix CD its hard to recognise many! Some of the tracks I did recognise included Digital Blonde – Gothica from the forthcoming Digital Blonde – Witch Project EP, Definition of Tekto – AREA, Airwave – Above the Sky and Alien Project – DJ Where are you. My highlight of the night was hearing Astral Projection – Chaos, an awesome Psy-trance monster of a track from the very talented Israeli psy duo. As the set moved on through the night, the music went on, quality psy and “intelligent” trance came at you from the very loud code sound system. As the last hour approached the dancefloor still had a fair few people, but some obviously could not take the pace at 5am, it had begun to feel a little empty, perhaps the set was a little too dark? John finished with an encore after playing Iio – Rapture (A pleasant surprise!) by playing Mike Koglin vs. Darren Tate – Now is the time, but as the turntable was turned off, the lights came on and it was time to leave! So soon, yet so late! You soon realise as you step outside of the club when the sunlight hits you just how long you have been in there for!
All in all it was a great night, but I feel It was let down a little by the order of DJs, I think it would have been better if John played 12-4 or even 11-3, and Push live on at the end. Overall the night was great fun, thanks to all the DJs and Push live for the entertainment!
