Claudio from S.H.O.K.K. briefs us on how it is like to be one of the most affluent hard trancers in Europe at the moment and we catch a glimpse of his busy lifestyle and modest attitudes.
We catch up with Claudio of S.H.O.K.K. and put together a small interview with the man behind one of the biggest hard trance acts this century so far. S.H.O.K.K. are Claudio and Marcos, two Swiss born producers who maintain a strong belief that the hard trance sound is the sound of the future.. who's to argue with them?
i:Vibes: What is it like having to share your partner in crime, Reverb with Dani, do you ever find that you need him to help with something on a tune and he's too busy, or do you & Dani manage to schedule his time accordingly to let you both get into the studio when you want?
S.H.O.K.K.: Flutlicht is Marcos and Dani’s thing, S.H.O.K.K. Marcos and mine. We tell our opinions to each other about a track or a remix. Reverb is a very busy man but we're always able to manage it. We are all good friends and that’s a key thing in our "business-relationship"
i:Vibes: Many people see your “Flutlicht vs S.H.O.K.K.” Remix of Amnesia as one of your finest works, do you have plans to make more tunes with DJ Natron in the studio as well as Reverb?
S.H.O.K.K.: We do not plan to do another Flutlicht vs. S.H.O.K.K. Remix in near future. It was a unique joint-venture just for that track and both projects will go their own way and have their own particular style.
i:Vibes: As someone who has just turned 22, did you ever think when you were 15 or 16 that this is what you would be doing at this time, and that you would be a success?
S.H.O.K.K.: I had hoped it would happen but I couldn't imagine it's possible. But you have to believe and work on it to make it happen. If you do your own way you'll have success in the one or other way. You have to be happy about that what you do, that's the most important thing. I believe in that theory that if a door closes, another one will open.
i:Vibes: You have just released the 3rd installation in the releases under the S.H.O.K.K. Alias, do you have a favourite out of the 3 tunes, or does it vary from time to time?
S.H.O.K.K.: It varies, yes. If I have to choose one I'll pick "Isn't It All a Little Strange?"
i:Vibes: As someone who is DJing more & more over the UK and Europe especially, how do you rate the various scenes that you play in?
S.H.O.K.K.: I can not rate the scenes. Every scene has some particular things I like or I don't. For sure UK clubbers are very euphoric; it's always a great atmosphere and feeling in the clubs or at the events!
i:Vibes: Do you have a favourite remix of yours?
S.H.O.K.K.: Cosmic Gate - Back to Earth!
i:Vibes: What was your musical upbringing, have you been into dance from an early age?
S.H.O.K.K.: I started early to listen to electronic music. But it was not dance music. I was fascinated about sounds they used for example in the movie "Beverly Hills Cop". Very old-styled and horrible synth sounds but I had to listen to it again and again. I often recorded a whole 90min tape with the same two tracks just that I don't have to rewind it all the time ;) The track who turned me definitively into electronic dance music was "U96 - Das Boot"
i:Vibes: Rated as perhaps amongst the “best” in the harder trance universe, are there any other artists who you think are ready to take the world by storm?
S.H.O.K.K.: I don't like these ratings. The clubbers shall decide on their own what they like and don’t like. There are different interesting artists, and in particular, I name "NU NRG" as a big one.
i:Vibes: Besides music, do you have time for any other past-times?
S.H.O.K.K.: At the moment we are very busy. We have some exams to finish school now and I still work for a company. So unfortunately there is not that much time left. I try to spend as much time as possible with my friends.
i:Vibes: What can we expect from you in the next few months release & gig wise?
S.H.O.K.K.: We're very busy at the moment, but we're working on different things on which I can't tell you more details as some of them are not confirmed. Booking wise I'll be back at Godskitchen in May, Impulz Outdoor in the Netherlands and of course OXA in Switzerland to name a few. Tours in Australia and South Africa are planned, more details will be available on www.shokk.info soon.
i:Vibes: Any words for your fans reading this?
S.H.O.K.K.: Thanx to all who support us and send us emails about their opinions or support me at the clubs, it's always a good thing to have a chat with you! Get Shokked!
Thanks Claudio and Chantal @ Mostwanted.
S.H.O.K.K.'s latest single "My Madness Says What I Must Do Relieve The Pain With Eating You" released in March 03.
