There is a bit of quality coming down the road, in the form of another cross-over between Kiss FM's Steve Smart and Olmecheads' new guise Deck Slaves.
We recently put in a review of Deck Slaves' The 47 Ronin, and that was one of the top choices for us for this year thus far. The latest work from the producers behind Carbon and Deck Slaves is this track titled In Da Mind, a dirty yet flowing track which will remind you of the good old days...
1. Carbon - In Da Mind (Original Mix) 2. Carbon - In Da Mind (Deck Slaves Headspace Remix)
Original Mix
When I recieved this, I had expected some gruelling pumping dark progressive beats and scapes, but I was not prepared for the chilling ambience and beautiful breakscape movement offered by Carbon on the original mix.
A translucent progressive track with flavourful breaks and vocals tinting the track, this is perfect for the season we are in now; with a summer theme and mellow charms, this comes through as being totally different in style from Carbon's remix of Deck Slaves' 47 Ronin.
Looks to be a strong contender in the boxes of James Holden, Sasha and the like.
Deck Slaves Headspace Mix
Starting off as a nice chunky progressive subbed out spaced out escapade, this remix would strike the hearts of DJs as deep and progressive as Sasha to the melodic likes of DJ Tiesto with its winding beats and melodies through the first 2 and a half minutes, before some suburban downtempo breakbeat grooves takes you something totally different.
When I first heard this, I was taken aback by the chilling effect the track had on me; Without being boring or plain but keeping it down and righteously progressive, this is a beautiful start to the summer season. And especially with Ibiza under way, I can see this one being big on the balearic shores with all the big jocks.
Having not heard the original remix, I cannot compare how much of this 4/4 affair is attributed to Carbon and how much is attributed to Deck Slaves, but either way, it doesn't matter; the track is undeniably blissful through its good 8 and a half minutes, showing that there is more than just bass and beats within the progressive genre.
Conclusion:
The two tracks on this reminds me of some of the great nu-skool progressive breaks which has come out over the years and for me, these are both 8am on the beach tracks amidst thousands of sun loving groovers. I would try to compare it with my last review of The 47 Ronin, but these are completely different in nature, but if you like a bit of progressive and a bit of breaks, this will be perfect for your summer.
