The creators from Being Single, Lonely People, Who's The Starter, ... take some time out to talk with us about producing together, where they met, and much more...
Hey guys,
Thanks for doing this interview :)
First of all, a non-musical question: who are you guys? Could you give us some info about yourselves; hobbies, pets, married… Bastian: I was born in 1967 in a little village near Amersfoort. I’m not married, but living together. My hobbies: movies, my pets (3 cats) and going to the beach… Ernesto: I was born in 1970 in Baarn. I live in Hilversum with 1 cat. I don’t have a relation. My hobby’s: music, clubbing and good food restaurants.
Where did you two meet each other? And was it an instant match? Bastian: We met at a job we had at that time. We were already in the music-business, but couldn’t make a living from it yet. We definitely had the same taste in music, so we decided to make some music together! After that, we were contacted by FTM Records and they gave us a record deal.
Your release ‘Lonely People’ has been played by all the top jocks, like Armin Van Buuren. Did you expect the high profile for that one? Yes, we actually did. The first responses in the studio were amazing. We made the song at the time when those two planes crashed into the WTC. So we had a very special feeling about that record.
When producing in the studio, do you always agree with each other? In the very beginning we didn’t. Nowadays we feel exactly the same thing when we’re producing a track. We know exactly what we want from each other.
Which part does each of you play when you’re producing? One brings the ideas, the other forms them into music, or do you play the exact same part? We both come up with ideas, but Bastian spends the most of the time in the studio and is the one who creates the tracks. Ernesto guards the credibility of the sound and lays an eye on the right club-feeling.
I just listened to DJ Ernesto - Urban Cowboy, and thought it was a great song. Any reason why you decided to have Ernesto make this on his own? We actually also did that song together, but thought it sounded a little bit different from EvsB, so we decided to release it as a DJ Ernesto track. It still is related to the EvsB sound, though. At the very first beginning, when we nearly finished the track, we didn’t even want it to be released at all, because we thought it was too beautiful… :-)
Where did you get the influence for all your releases by now, like using those vocals in Being Single, Lonely People? You never know where influences come from, but Bastian is a real fan of Klaus Schulze. This melancholy sound really left it’s tracks in the EvsB sound! It’s also a little bit tougher and harder than your average ‘trance’. Actually we wouldn’t call our music ‘trance’. In the future you will hear much more tracks with voices, guitars and drums. We also have a live-act on stage together with drummer Gerrie Spaansen and vocalist Michèle van Trigt, and there you can see and hear what we really like: danceable pop music.
You are from Holland, one of the leading countries when it comes to trance (uplifting, progressive, …), so it must be easier for you to get a release. Or maybe not, since there is so much stuff out there… We are exclusively committed to FTM records, so we really don’t know if it is difficult to get a record-deal at this moment. We also have our own label, which is called ‘Miracle Sound’. So we release records and tracks from other producers that we sign. But to get a record deal with us, that’s difficult for sure! :-)
What’s the most difficult thing you had to overcome to see a song be released? (Bastian:) I think that was the time before we collaborated. At that time nobody wanted to release my tracks. I think that was because my music wasn’t ready for the big audience yet; it was probably not well-shaped enough. Although the music had nearly the same sound, I reckon A&R managers didn’t quite understand it.
If there was one thing you would still want to do, what would it be? To make a record with Depeche Mode, or another big UK pop band!
What other hopes, dreams or aspirations do you have? Musically or non-musically? As we mentioned, we hope that people really like our live-act, because it sure is something different than a deejay spinning his records, and surely different from playback acts! Second of course, we hope our label will sky-rocket. It would also be nice to have our own radio show.
What other things can we expect from you in the future? Remixes, productions, mix albums or artist albums? The new EvsB track is ready and is being remixed by different very talented young producers of our label and by a well-know producer (to be announced). This week, the release of ‘Who’s the starter’ will be a fact and shortly after that you can expect a special remix-EP of ‘Who’s the starter’. Later this year you also can expect other projects from us, such as the long awaited new Lumination. This will be great!
That’s about it,
Thanks a billion for taking the time out to answer these questions :)
Good luck with all your future projects.
