Paul Van Dyk sets fire to Central Park, a unique happening witnessed by thousands! Read this cool party report and download the PvD at Central Park video.
Pvd In Central Park 8-28-03
First a little setup. If you have never been to central park before you don’t know size and scale of it. This isn’t just another patch of grass in the land with some swing in it and they called it a park. This park is huge! Now Paul hasn’t been to New York on a steady basis since the closing of Twilo (RIP) so this was an extra special treat for everyone in NYC for this event to be held there.
The event was held outdoors and no one could have asked for a more beautiful day to have it on. Not a cloud in the sky. And it wasn’t overwhelmingly hot. Just the right temperature to be in such a place with so many people. Once you got to the general area of the event it wasn’t really hard to find where to go as you just followed the hoards and hoards of kids dressed to dance and party. The doors opened at 4:30 pm and Paul was scheduled to start at 6pm with a 4 hour set.
Me never being the one wanting to sit around listening to warm up sets I arrived at 5:40. To my surprise the park was not as packed as expected and no music at all was being played. Looks like Paul was going to be it for the night. Not that I’m complaining I met up with a group of my friends and their friends and promptly forced our way to front and center stage as close as we could get without being thrown for jumping the fences separating the crowd from Paul. To say the least the stage was huge and general event area was huge. The stage though didn’t really matter though because one person in the center of the stage not doing much moving around doesn’t require all that much room. It was set up quite nicely. There were these huge 10 foot by 5 foot mirrors hanging all around. While they looked great during the day their full purpose will be known later on. All around the area were giant “Made Events” and Concert in the park” Banners. Food/beverage stands were selling beer and good old New York hot dogs and pretzels. Also being sold were vandit shirts and some of Paul’s albumns/cd compilations In the back of the event area were bleachers where people were relaxing and eagerly awaiting Paul’s arrival and the music he would bring with him.
After waiting around for 10 minutes the crowd let out a huge roar and starting to clap and scream. Everyone’s attention turned towards the stage where you saw Paul walking on wearing a long sleeved heavy cotton zip up jacket. I don’t know what he was thinking but he took it right off to reveal a white vandit shirt with black lettering. He gave a quick wave to the crowd and started setting up stuff. As he was setting up a representative of “concerts in the park” came on a microphone spurting out random nonsense. All the crowd wanted to do was hear Paul. So they started a PVD chant which stopped this woman dead in her sentence. Paul just looked at the crowd then looked at the women on the mic as if saying to her “I don’t know just do what you got to do” The lady tried to continue but the crowd was just so excited they couldn’t stop screaming and clapping for Paul to start his set. The lady finally got annoyed and told the crowd that “this party wasn’t going to get started till these announcements are done and I have all night.” That statement shut most of the crowd up but set a bad tone for most. As you can hear an uproar of boos and random comments being shout out such as “get off the stage” and “shut up you stupid bitch”. After 5 minutes of ranting and raving about who the concert was brought to you by and this that and the other thing she handed things over to Paul. Paul didn’t come out throwing down. It was actual very laid back. I think he was just doing a self sound test on the system before he really got into it. The sound was disappointing for the first hour or two as it was low and hardly any bass. I would relate it to being in a lounge of some sort. You were able to have a conversation with someone standing next to you at normal volume. Not like the usual having to scream over the music and hope that the person next to you hears you.
Around 7:30 - 8pm things started to pick up. Paul picked up the pace and the volume. As the sun went down the crowd got more and more into it. You can just feel the mood and atmosphere changing. Things got cooler and people started moving more. By 830 the crowd was full on into it along with Paul who was also having a blast. Being very interactive with the crowd and the most animated I’ve seen him live anywhere. The lights and fog machine were going by this time and at the peak of tiesto’s traffic track the lasers went full blown wild. The look on Pauls face when this happened was that of one of the people in the crowd. He turned around and was like “WTF!” smiled and just continued to do his thing.
In closing the night was not one of best Pauls sets. He ended his set with Time Of Our Lives and encored, because the crowd just wouldn’t go away, with Nothing But You. After it was all said and done they threw posters out which Paul had previously signed and people went nuts trying to grab. I was lucky enough to get one though. Sound was decent.. as one person said it wasn’t the usual phazon we are used to hearing paul on but it was decent considering the circumstances. The venue was great over-all good night. So untill October 6th when paul makes his return to nyc.
