Like many that attended Homelands this year, I had my list of acts I had to see and those that I wasn’t too bothered about. Un-Cut didn’t make the “had to” list. I wasn’t that fussed about them. Sure I liked “midnight” and I applauded them for winning a Dancestar award last year for being the best new act; but with the likes of Grandmaster Flash, The Streets and Derrick Carter on the bill I thought I would give them a miss.
A few weeks ago a copy of their album landed on my floor and now I wish I hadn’t had that extra hour or so in bed and I’d got to Winchester that little bit earlier, as I would have had a chance too see the act who were about to release my album of the year!
I know claiming an album as my album of the year this early on is a little gutsy but I’m like that and I know I’m right.
What I love about this CD is that it’s wonderfully eclectic. Not eclectic in the way that the industry seems to label any album which has different sounds as eclectic, I mean truly diverse. Jenna G provides the vocals for the album and was discovered by Darren and 2D (Un-Cut’s producers) while performing with hip-hop group Subliminal Darkness; but their influences and style stretches much further than hip-hop. The lead single “Midnight” was labelled as Drum ‘n’ Base, while their next single “Fallin’” is pure soul. Moving though the album we get a taste of Reggae and Ska thanks to some great horns and ska organs on “No way” then slip in to a jazz frame of mind on “Music is m” with some truly chilled snare work and sleazy as ya like trumpets. Funk, deep soul, Mowtown and Northern soul are just a handful of other sounds you can expect to hear on this transcendental soundscape.
Conclusion:
If last years album of the year was “Original Pirate Material” then “The Un-Calculated Some” is this years. Passionate vocals, educated arrangements and my feel good song of the year (Things you do) are just three factors that leave me kicking myself for not seeing them at Homelands. Oh well there is still Tribal Gathering (August 23rd).
