On the eve of their latest CD, Nukluez & Sundissential allowed us to throw some questions at the two mixers of their forthcoming compilation, so find it all here!
[i:Vibes] to Nick Rafferty
How did your success with sundissential come about ? I was part of Sundissential from nearly the start. I used to work full time with them flyering, promoting and of course being one of the residents. It all developed from there. How do you go about mixing a cd in the studio, compared to playing live, do you approach it the same ? I approach the studio mix in exactly the same way as far as building the set is concerned, the only difference with a live set is you do feed off the crowd so sometimes it may take a slightly different direction. I hope the album is a reflection of a typical set. Influences growing up & now? Influences growing up in the early days were the residents at Bakers and Crunch in Birmingham. Such a strong and consistent evening every week. Now I try and do my own thing and hope it works. What is is like to work with Paul Kershaw Paul and myself have been friends for a long time now. We have always both been interested in the trancier music although I have tended to be harder. So we got together and we have been really happy with the results. He knows his stuff. Top 5 DJs of all time ? 1. Sasha 2. Mauro Picotto 3. Tony De Vit 4. Jon Pleased Wimmin 5. Jeremy Heally These are really the strong ones when I used to go clubbing.
What does the future hold ? The future is to keep making tracks and hopefully improve each time. Appart from that who knows what the future holds! thoughts on mp3s ? MP3 are useful for quickly transfering files but you will never get away from the roar feel of vinyl! Would you do anything different in your career to how it's gone ? Only possibly in the early days spent a little more time on early records. Things wre really rushed a few years ago, it was a case of get it done and get out. That isn't anymore. The quality needs to be superb!
Where do you think your sound will be in 5 years time ? Hopefully I will still be playing good uplifting dance music. The whole idea of clubbing is to let your hair down and have fun! Don't forget that!! I hope you enjoy the album! Nick
[i:Vibes] to Illogik
Influences growing up and now Not really one particular influence but many, as i grew up in the early rave scene i would say that all the names in that scene were my influences, dj's such as Carl cox, sasha and my favorite dj for years was slipmatt also dj hype and dj sy for their scratching.
How has your sound evolved from the hardcore days, and what made you change My sound is a define sound and is not really like anyonelses as i dont try and do what lots of others do in the studio.
Why the slight change in names ? I used to be E-logic in my hardcore days but felt that i needed to change my name due to the stigma attached to hardcore back then. I really like the name too so i just decided to spell it the proper way (ilogik), hence making it not so cheesy.
Your top 5 DJs of all time Carl cox Sasha slipmatt Hype West Bam
How did you start scratching on cd decks ? I dont really scratch on cd decks as all my scratch tools are on vinyl but this may change. I started scratching about 12 years ago but back then i was not soo good, it has taken alot of practise which has been hard as i teached my self everything because back then there was no one for me to really learn off. I think that is why i have a destinct scratch style that no one else has becased i learned to scratch over 4/4 beats and not over break beats thus adapting it and almost coming up with grooves over tracks.
Your Thoughts on mp3s Mp3s are ok but i dont use them. I think they are costing producers alot off money on the net as people are just downloading tracks for nothing.
What does the future hold for Illogik ? Ummm watch this space, lots more releases , more collaborations and i plan to do a solo album with a difference after the sundissential album is released.
Many thanks to both guys for their time & insights here, and find the review for the cd up very soon, I can promise you it's going to be huge!
