With the Ibiza summer season just finished, we have a quick chat with Balearic master Bruno Lepretre - the prodigal replacement for Jose Padilla at Cafe del Mar to see what it's really in Ibiza.
Hi there Bruno, hope you are well and thank you for doing this interview.
i:Vibes: Many have considered you as the successor to legendary Jose Padilla. How do you feel about that?
Bruno: I took over from Jose Padilla as resident of CAFE DEL MAR in 1997. Now i'm recognised as the DJ from CAFE DEL MAR, it wasn't easy because everyone knew Jose through the world famous Cafe del Mar "Volume" series, thinking he was still playing there.
i:Vibes: You are actually from France originally right? So what brought you to the shores of Ibiza and why did you decide to stay?
Bruno: I first came in Ibiza in 1994 and quickly decided to stay and start a new life. At first I did many jobs to survive here and slowly get more and more involved into music as a DJ. I started to play in bars during the winter before I opened my own record shop in 1996. It brought me many interesting contacts, and also improved my acknowledge of the music market.
i:Vibes: A lot of people don't really understand what Balearic style of music is, would you like to give a brief personal insight to this?
Bruno: Balearic is actually the name of the four islands including Ibiza, it's not really a music style but it's the way the music is played in Ibiza, a fusion of electronic and acoustic sounds, a crossover between world musics - difficult to describe it, but something like; happy, smoothy, sunny, sexy, exotic, eclectic ...
i:Vibes: And do you ever play music which isn't in the style of ambient chillout which you are more or less stereotyped with? How do you describe yourself in terms of music style?
Bruno: Most of the people just know me through the chill out scene. that's what i'm doing with CAFE DEL MAR but i'm also playing house music in clubs around the world. Basically my music style goes from ambient moods, through jazzy vibes and funky grooves to house sounds.
i:Vibes: What do you like most about Ibiza? and where are the best spots there?
Bruno: Ibiza is more than beaches and clubs. it's a magical place with spiritual vibes. People are open and tolerant, nature is everywhere.
i:Vibes: The island is only really open during the summer months, so what do you do the rest of the year?
Bruno: Summer is for tourists, the rest of the time it's a quiet place as it was before. After the summer, i have a more laid back activity on the island but i'm more busy playing in clubs or working on productions.
i:Vibes: Speaking of the summer, Ibiza season is nearing an end now, anything memorable about this year?
Bruno: This summer was really hot, too many people in August but personally I had a great season. The sunsets at CAFE DEL MAR were even more magnificient than before..
i:Vibes: How about give us a taste of what's in your record box right now?
Bruno: Depending which record box, i have one with chill out stuff, another one with jazzy breaks and electro funk, lots of deep house material or one is which is only for clubs. Nothing in particular though.
i:Vibes: You're involved in some of the productions under Lovers Lane, Deep & Wide, etc. tell us a bit about that and what's to come?
Bruno: I started with DEEP & WIDE with Lenny from Ibizarre. Now i'm having two different projects: "Lovers Lane" and "Ohm G & Bruno". I have an offer to do my first album, let's see. Anyway, I will be more involved into production this winter.
i:Vibes: Finally, has chillout changed since you started listening to it over 10 years back?
Bruno: 10 years ago, we were talking about ambient or new age music. Now Chillout is everywhere, more than a muisc style it's an attitude for modern livings. People needs to be cool and relax. Music always changes so chill out too.
Thanks!
