Finally, after waiting for a long time, the first DJ Orkidea album is released. Ranging from 1998 to 2003, with own productions such as Unity, and remixes such as his remix of Flight 643.
Tracklisting: 1. Inner Peace 2. Unity 3. Beautiful 4. Melancholy (featuring Valeska) 5. Space Manoeuvres – Stage One (DJ Orkidea Remix) 6. DJ Tiësto – Flight 643 (DJ Orkidea’s Wintergalactic Remix) 7. Aalto – Rush (Super8 vs Orkidea Remix) 8. Leama – Labyrinth (DJ Orkidea Remix)
First up we have on Taika is Inner Peace. It starts off with some sounds from the forest, birds chirping. This song is the perfect opener for this album. It’s filled with breakbeat… But then you’re in a for a nice surprise. It uses samples from The Matrix, which makes that there’s a story behind this song. The breakdown in Inner Peace is amazing also, with samples from Morpheus poured over it.
The next song doesn’t need much info I think. Unity has already become a classic, with support from Sasha (remember his NYE set? He openend with this). According to the sleeve notes, this was made as an end to a night at Club Unity, but it wasn’t just that. It became more, much more! What makes this so special you might think? Just the fact that everyone knows this is one of the main reasons. This song can make a dancefloor erupt, when there’s no one on the dancefloor. The power behind this song is everything. And that power comes foremost from the lyrics. Those lyrics come from Dead Can Dance. This was co produced by Nicklas Renqvist (of Slusnik Luna fame).
Beautiful is something completely different. It’s a full on trancer, made with one purpose only: letting people dance. And it succeeded in that mission. It has everything you want in a trance track. A great melody, lots of nice synths and strings, and a great bassline.
Melancholy (featuring Valeska) has been in the making for two years. That’s right, 24 months before this got was transformed into this version. This is much ‘harder’, without getting too hard for trance fans. But it’s been compensated with soft lyrics by Valeska. Melancholy is spot on. It’s hard & soft at the same time, without overdoing it. The perfect dosis!
And now we’re on to the track of the CD in my opinion. Space Manoeuvres – Stage One (DJ Orkidea Remix) is one of those songs that has been played, but that no one has, simply because it hasn’t been released up till now. It was a big favorite with Paul Oakenfold who used to hammer it in his Essential Mix, making this song wanted by every Oakey fan. Now, 4 years later, it finally sees a release (only on CD though). The original version is made by John Graham aka Quivver, and is progressive to the fullest extent. Tapio has taken the most prominent elements from the song (melody, and the amazing lyrics – samples) and merged them with his interpretation of how this should sound like. And the result is magic. This song will be the highlight of this CD for many people around the globe, who have been waiting for years and years!
Orkidea’s remix of Flight 643 is something to write home about. The original didn’t do it for me, but this remix totally transformed it into a monster. The only thing Orkidea kept is the infamous melody from Flight 643. All the rest is his work, and the combination between the melody and all the rest works. That’s all that matters. Just listening to this song, makes you want to dance, even if you’re at home.
The second last song on this album is Aalto – Rush (Super8 vs Orkidea Remix). Immediately capturing your complete attention from the start, is the short bit of the woman singing. Normally I’d listen to this song once, and then just let it be, since this is not my style at all. But this song is different. I can’t exactly pinpoint the part that succeeds at keeping me interested throughout the song
Last song on this album is his remix of Leama’s Labyrinth. Leama has always been a great producer, remember Melodica, and more recently Requiem For A Dream? The start of this song is just dreamlike. Almost taking up two minutes of this song, the intro is a dream for everyone playing a set. What more can you want from an intro than to keep you begging for more? The rest of the song is of the same quality. Enchanting melody, a driving bass-line. Short, a perfect ending song for a great CD.
Conclusion:
All in all, I was happily surprised when I played this CD. I was expecting 8 songs in the same style, but this album is very diverse, and has enough variation to keep you occupied throughout the whole album! This album couldn't be any better! GET IT if you can!
