Mark Norman comes straight out of Holland and onto the classy Magik Muzik label with 3 powerful tracks of Tech Trance!
This vinyl contains a generous helping of tunes in the form of three different tracks - Stream, Overkill (Intro Mix) and Shine. Each one explores a different area of the Tech Trance genre in a comprehensive and fulfilling way with very good results.
:: Mark Norman - Stream/Overkill/Shine :: Magik Muzik :: BHMM815
A1: Stream Stream starts with a lone heavy beat which is quickly joined by some percussion and a wonderfully 'techy' coarse synth. The track has a mini break/build up and makes a return with the synth playing a continuously stabbing melody along with the nice hefty beat and accompanying percussion. As the track progresses, a thick yet subtle bassline is introduced giving the track just the right amount of body. A breakdown follows featuring yet more of the coarse stabbing synth along with a breakbeat section to loosen things up a bit. You then return to a few more minutes of the main tune before it starts dropping layers and winding down. Stream might seem a little on the progressive side, but the stabbing synth compensates for this by adding energy and a nice edge to the sound of the track.
B1: Overkill (Intro mix) As the mix name suggests, this is a track to be used as an introduction (or as an intermission, if one were to mix after the initial build up!). Think along the lines of Katana's Intro Mix of Viframa - Crystalle. The first third of Overkill is an ambient synthy build up, albeit with coarse synths similar to the one in Stream, with the final part of the build up featuring a backing beat - which fits nicely. Once this intro makes its final build up, it transforms into a single very hefty beat with a stab of synth every 2 beats. Some percussion is added and this continues until the end of the track.
B2: Shine Its a good thing this track is called Shine, because it does just that. I was pleasantly surprised to hear this after hearing the first two very techy tracks. Shine begins quickly with a nice strong beat and percussion which is quickly complimented by a bassline which has a much more upbeat feel to it than the previous two tracks. A synth is introduced, teasing of a melody to come. This time its not as coarse - it still has a tech feel to it, but is capable of a much more melodic sound and thats where the beauty lies. A breakdown follows, featuring this synth alone playing the full melody - as Shine turns out to be a very melodic track. Once the breakdown is over, the track basically repeats but with the synth playing over the top. Shine is a wonderful track - a few simple ideas and a really nice melody combined together making something very special. It wouldn't surprise me to see remixes of this in the future.
Three great examples of Tech Trance which should help cater for those occasions when hard just won't do but tech can deliver.
Conclusion:
Mark Norman provides us with three excellent tracks, on two sides of vinyl, on one quality label. Great stuff!
