The latest ASOT release has hit the shelves! Since this track has made it onto this supreme label, it can only mean one thing...
A new name for us all - Empirical Labs, debuting on the one and only A State Of Trance, Armin Van Buuren's outstanding trance label. With an interesting name and a quirky track title of Turtle Beach, the only thing to do is to put the stylus in place and let the vinyl do the talking.
:: Empirical Labs - Turtle Beach :: ASOT :: ASOT 010
A: Original Mix Turtle Beach starts off with a very tribal kind of sound but then leaps into immediate action with a strong, punchy beat and crisp percussion. It bowls along at 145BPM so it doesn't wait around - you can't help but ask at this speed can it uphold the unblemished reputation of ASOT? Well, you're answered with a breakdown of monumental proportions. It starts simple with a dreamy synth background pulling in some more bass, from which emerges a melody which rises from a low down sound to a clean crisp trancey synth. This builds and builds and then it leaps back into action at its daring speed and proves its worth. After a mini break, a rest period comes in, which uses a repeating rising scale to good effect - keeping the track alive but providing a breather at the same time. Another breakdown follows where you're treated to the emergence of that exquisite synth build up once more and then the track goes full power for a few more minutes to maximise your enjoyment.
The Original Mix of Turtle Beach is a brilliantly unique track in that it holds a speed that trance doesn't usually venture into while at the same time its definite eyes closed hands in the air material. Its fresh, its fast, its new and its great!
B: Outback Remix The Outback Remix of Turtle Beach is a lot slower than the original, with defined beats and a twanging bassline. This mix is a very progressive state of affairs, with the track evolving slightly as each minute passes, adding extra little bits to the prominent kick, bass and percussion. There is a reason for this, though. It seems this track focuses on its 'centrepiece', which is a dreamy, trancey, synth filled rendition of the main Turtle Beach melody. Its almost like a showcase for the tune. After this, theres a small coarse synth/sfx break after which the track resumes on its progression, adding all those little extras then taking them away for the wind down.
Two outstanding mixes of a really special track here - the Original deservedly taking the trance prize and the Outback Remix taking the progressive prize.
Conclusion:
Empirical Labs have produced a wonderful track here - the Original Mix is something truly special and it is definetly one of the best tracks on the ASOT label to date.
