Biosphere crafts amazing albums out of aural soundscapes and pure bliss. His other albums were incredible but can Biosphere continue the trend with Shenzhou? Read on for a full review.
Since a number of us crew members at i:Vibes have been asked the following “Where can I find good chillout?” and since we realized that more people wanted to get into chillout and find good chillout music, we give you the newest feature. From now on, every month or every few weeks, we shall be highlighting chillout and ambient music cd’s and vinyl from around the world. Every month, we shall have the i:Vibes Chillout CD of the month chosen by a member of the crew and we shall be finding old cd’s and new ones. So for November 2003, the Chillout Album is Biosphere – Shenzhou (Touch Recordings).
Biosphere is an alias for a Norwegian music producer named Geir Jenssen who hails from Tromso, Norway and has been making finely crafted chillout and ambient music for years. He is a relative unknown to some of you because most of his stuff is released on certain labels that don’t get the press that they deserve. So his 2002 release called “Shenzhou” which got the attention of chillout addicts will be reviewed here.
Shenzhou is a finely crafted album, which contains twelve tracks, which take the mind away and allow you to chillout. Comes with amazing photography in the cd inlay and it sort of adds to the entire package. Tracks one to ten on the cd are based on works by the Famous French Composer Claude Debussy and Biosphere takes them to new heights. All the tracks are great for quiet moments and great on a powerful stereo. It is amazing what he does with each track, and uses certain techniques to make this album so enjoyable. This is his music, remember he lives in a town near the arctic circle (well closer than some) and with this playing and the scenery, it is what he imagines for people who listen to his music. All the tracks are unique and take you on an aural journey. This may be a little too deep in terms of ambient music for some but a great chillout album.
Post your thought about chillout albums in the thread with this review
Conclusion:
Biosphere takes you on an aural journey of ambience. He crafts each and every song with care. What an album!
