More mixes of Envio's delightful track, Touched By The Sun. With mixes from Endre, Airbase and another from Rusch & Elusive, how do these mixes stand up to the ones on the first record...?
In case you missed it, a review of the first Touched By The Sun vinyl can be found here.
This remixes vinyl expands on the styles already presented by the first disc, as opposed to having completely new versions of the track. This works out nicely since Touched By The Sun is a track that really does belong in the realms of relaxed, semi-chilled trance.
:: Envio - Touched By The Sun (The Remixes) :: ASOT :: ASOT 009
A1: Endre Mix The Endre Mix is a very mellow interpretation of Envio's latest piece. It relies on a steady progression into euphoria instead of focussing on the emergence of a main melody, with synths playing in the background instead of being the centre of attention. It starts with a lonely beat and soon percussion supported by ambient chords. Bass is soon added, providing more body and something for the chords to mix with and develop further. Again, this mix sounds very Chicane influenced and the bass reminded me ever so slightly, for a short moment at least, of Tiesto's remix of Delerium's Silence. The breakdown briefly features a very echoey piano and introduces long, synthy and sustained backing chords. The piano features briefly again in a short break before the track begins its wind down.
B1: Airbase Remix Being responsible for producing Rock under the Ozone alias (reviewed here), I was looking forward to hearing the remix by Airbase. Here, you are moved along by a much more driving bassline, edgy jittery synths and an off-beat female choir 'aah'. Again the trance of old and the Chicane styles show through, especially in the breakdown. But towards the end of the breakdown, a very nice sounding synth begins to flutter over the top and is joined by a high pitched version on the lovely guitar melody that makes the original mixes so good. To finish, layer after layer of synth is removed until the basic beat and bassline remains.
B2: Rusch & Elusive Remix Rusch & Elusive have provided a more upbeat version of Touched By The Sun, having already produced a chill-out mix on the first disc. It features a rather bubbly bassline, an early emphasis on a percussion hit which is like a hi-hat crossed with a snare and that Chicane style backing synth once again. There is a short breakbeat section which is used to take you into the breakdown where things are calmed nicely with female choir 'aahs' and the electric guitar melody. When the track comes back in, things are incredibly synthed up with layer upon layer of sound. To provide a much more uplifting trance feel, there is a lot of treble with a fine layer of noise over the top of this entire section of the track. From this point on, we reach the final section of the track where everything winds down to a close.
Conclusion:
More variation on the already varied first disc. The Airbase and Rusch & Elusive remixes will appeal strongly to the trance fans as they focus on the uplifting side instead of the chilled side of trance. Endre's Remix is a good bridge between trance and more progressive trance.
