The latest offering on the Recover label is a tougher slice of hard/tech-trance - a joint effort between producers Scott Mac and Simon Eve, called 'Always'.
'Always' is a rather clever piece of work. It is a combination of elements from several different sub-genres of the whole hard dance music spectrum. Good variation is provided because each of the two mixes achieve this combination of elements in a different way. Heres how...
:: Scott Mac & Simon Eve - Always :: Recover Promo :: RECOVER 030
A: Original Mix The original starts with a small percussive section, half of which sounds like a bassless trebled up loop from Marco V's 'Godd'. A very strong and punchy beat is introduced, as is a deep and grainy - yet pretty snappy - bassline. Shortly, some droning bass sounds begin playing in the background, which complement an additional instrument which begins to play. It sounds like a very heavily sampled electric guitar. At this point, you have a nice mixture of a hard house bass sound, with a percussive sfx filled tech trance sound. There follows a breakdown where a new synth is introduced which develops the melody the electric guitar introduced. Also, a vocal sample is thrown in for good measure - its not overused at all and fits in very nicely. After the breakdown, the peak of the track consists of a merger of all of the bass, beats, melody and sfx heard previously. From here, the track winds itself down to a close.
B: Wavestorm Remix The Wavestorm Remix begins with a housier feel and sound. It uses a rounder beat and more subtle percussion. This is soon contrasted though, with the addition of a very hard house style off-beat bassline. Echoey background synths are introduced which provide a good depth to the sound. The track is soon flowing along nicely, playing the main melody with some jittery backing synths providing assistance. The breakdown consists mainly of the different synths making their individual parts heard. It leads into the main body of the track, with everything playing together. Another breakdown ends off this section, making for a nice way to lead the track into its final sections. The vocal sample also features here in a much more audible form than in the Original Mix.
Both of these tracks can be used in many occasions! You have the harder sounding, yet relatively slow paced, techy Original along with the much faster, yet more mellow trancey sounding Wavestorm Remix. Each mix contrasting with itself as well as with each other.
Conclusion:
'Always' is a nice track. Its hard to categorise the genre exactly due to the clever way it has been put together, which is one of its most appealing traits! Its a good all-rounder which wouldn't be out of place in harder or softer sets alike.
