Nightlife makes a second appearance on Liquid Recordings with the dark trancer 'Annihilating'. Sporting the Original and a Club Mix, what can be said of Liquid's latest offering...?
Having made past appearances on Nebula as well as on Liquid, which is backed up strongly by artists such as 4 Strings and Ron Van De Beuken, I was looking forward to hearing this record when I saw it.
:: Nightlife - Annihilating :: Liquid :: LQ 036
A: Original Mix The Original Mix kicks straight off with a beat and bassline that immediately commands and drives you forward, followed shortly by a coarse, sinister sounding synth which sets the mood for the rest of the track - something which is on the more darker side of trance. After a short ambient break, the first of the tracks two main sections comes into play. This one is a more backing synth/bass driven section, with a repeating melody which keeps the dark feel, holds your interest, but holds back from that 'this is building up to something' sound. After another ambient break, the second section is introduced. This drops the backing synth/bass lead for a more prominent lead instrument which borrows heavily from the lead used in Tiesto's 'Lethal Industry'. To round off the track, a final section of the dark backing synth/bass section is played through, which eventually drops off to take the track to an end.
B: Club Mix Remember that dark backing synth/bass from the Original? Well it dives straight in to start the Club Mix. A breakdown comes about rather quickly here - which is preceded by some quietly provoking stabbing synths in the background. This quiet section is a little longer than usual and features female choirs 'ahhs' with a nice little synth melody to back it up. Soon, the main tune kicks in again, this time featuring an evolved version of the dark synth melody which has a little more variation than before. The track continues like this with 2 more breakdowns and more dark synth lead main sections.
The Original Mix is nicely dark and moody, kept interesting with the introduction of a fresh new sound half way through. The Club Mix is less dark trance, but has a more progressive element since it sticks to the one backing synth driven melody throughout - kept interesting however by the nice sounding breakdowns.
Conclusion:
'Annihilating' is a good track which promises good things to come from Nightlife in the future. The dark trance element definetly, I think, gives it the edge it needs. I am certainly looking forward to future Nightlife productions.
